I know this is an old topic I just did about an hours worth of reading about it. I have but one question. I looked at this and was wondering if my '96 fits in this "affected vehicle range". http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/TSBScans/sb618833.pdf .where do I find these numbers? I just got my disco back from the dealer and they said that was a "Normal" engine noise for a '96 w/72K on the clock. I just disagreed with them and they said there was nothing they could do. I still have a warrenty on it for about another 1200 miles. any help would be great.
Thanks

Naaf,

I believe if there is a ticking noise there are 2 culprits. 1 what you outlined here in your attachment or an exhaust leak. I'd get them to isolate the noise for you and tell you specifically "what" is making the noise. If is wasn't under warranty I'd tell you yo live with it and turn up the radio.

Those numbers are the last eight digits of the VIN#. I'm surprised that you are not happy with the dealership. Most people get upset when the car is broke in the shop or they have to spend a lot of money. The dealer makes money by fixing things whether you or the factory pays. They don't make anything by sending you away and not fixing anything. Like Rob said, normal or not, a qualified technician should be able to point out what exactly is noisy. I'm putting my money on rocker arms, even the ones in my '03 rattle a bit.

I understand that I should be happy that they said I don't owe them $1500. BUT I hear a valvetrain ticking noise and I know it's not supposed to make that noise. It's only made this noise for the past 1000 miles.
Yes I had an '03 this week and sorry I like the sound of my 4.0 over the 4.6 sure the 4.6 is a hell of alot faster but I have a fast car I don't need that, I think the 4.0 is smoother. Yeah alot of people are gonna love that statement.

The 4.0 is smoother. They changed something in the 4.6 and it idles rough but off idle is a BIG improvement for street use.
IMHO
