was driving fine, pulled into parking garage with Uhaul trailer, unhitched trailer and backed trailer into a spot, then went to move 1996 Disco and auto trans stuck in park. I wired in the uhaul wiring harness and everything works fine with the trailer lights. I'm partially blocking entrance to garage, and tow truck will be coming soon.

I'm researching that damn switch tied into the brake pedal, but is there any quick way to bypass the damn switch so I can move the DIsco? Could the trailer wiring and this problem be connected?

I don't think the trailer wiring could be connected to the problem (but with Lucas at work, who really knows?)

Be sure to put transfer case in neutral before the tow truck driver tries to move it!

I wish the LRs had an override for the shift interlock. At times like this it would be really useful.

Blue, of course there is - a wire with alligator clips. your brake lights may remain on, but you can drive around.

i'm still pissed about how ugly is to change the brake switch on the range rover... took me two freakin' hours last night! half an hour just to dig through the crap around the pedal. since the cruise control wasn't working, i used the contacts on the c.c. switch. They were normally-closed (as opposed to normally-open on the gear interlock switch), so i had to use a relay to cludge together a working brake light setup.

brake lights work fine

can't hear the mechanical release at the shifter when I press the brake pedals

checking fuses now

going to also wiggle microswitches at the shifter

brake pedal switch is the black box with four pins, labelled AMR 2010 TRW M

correct?

I have it out and will have to find a replacement.

anyone know which wires (corresponding to the 4 pins in the switch) I can quick connect to at least get this driveable so I can 1) move it out of the way and 2) get the replacement part? Pin connector is unidirectional - one end is rounded.

a $20 bill to the right guy has postponed the tow truck for a little bit

yes, this looks like a correct part to me.
if you have a DMM, it is rather easy to find which ones control the brake lights and which ones - the interlock.

'far as i can remember, it was two pins in the middle that needed to be shorted. i pulled the switch out (so my brake lights were on) and had the interlock pins shorted, until i bought a replacement.

Pulled this off atlantic british's website:

Can't shift out of park - Troubleshooting
Vehicle - Landrover Discovery and 1995 Range Rover Classic

Check to see if you have stoplights. No lights check:

a. Fuse f1 in the fascia fuse box ok? (Discovery, if the fuse the blows check the terminals on the back window grids making sure they are not touching each other causing a short. They get bent easily)
b. Inspect the brake light switch on the brake pedal (The brake light switch has four wires on it and the cruise switch has two wires and a vacuum line on it).
If switch is intact:
a. Jump the green/purple wire and the green/orange wire; the brake lights should come on enabling the shift out of park.
b. Caution! The brake lights will be on all the time. Have problem repaired as soon as possible. Also you may get an ABS fault stored.
4. If you have stoplights pop the top of the shift lever off and check to see if the clip on the button is intact. They have been known to come off and not lift the rod in the handle.
1992-1994 Range Rover Classic:
Same as above except: Dash fuse box fuse# B1 and jump wires: white/purple and green/purple at brake light switch #AMR2010G.

Hope it helps.

yeah i keep an extra switch in the truck from now on. or if someone i am with has one go. they are good for RRC's too. imagine if you were 100 miles out in the woods. luckily a shop 2 blocks from my truck had the part.

Yes, please take a picture maybe write a tech article with pics ... that would be great!

Did you short out the switch to get it running ... via the same method listed on the AB site?

Thanks!

This was like watching surgery! Wonderful team work, boys. Since this is up for discussion again, I've wanted to ask: Does the DII suffer this same potential problem? Seems like I've read it does, resulting in loads of tows to the dealership by new owners. What a system....

any car/truck can suffer this (that has the shift override), but i remember wayyyyyyyyy back this was talked about. that is why when this happened to me last summer i knew just what it was. i had just started dating my girlfriend and she was there and more than impressed with my diagnosis. well maybe it was my nice ass, but who knows. regardless i knew where to look and what to replace. took 5-10 mins. and we were on our way. had to walk 2 blocks to get the part. was very lucky.....a dealer item type part. dealer is 1.5 hours from me.
keep an extra one in your truck. they cost about $35 or so.

OK, so has anyone just permanently disabled this 'feature'? Not one of my other automatic trans vehicles has anything like this(they are all old, made back when we didn't have to be saved from ourselves). I have not determined a *really good* reason to leave this brake/shifter interlock system in place just so it can fail and cause grief(OK, so it helped Garrett impress the lady, I'm long past fooling my wife).

Mildly amusing anecdote on this subject: My in-laws were in Silverthorne having trouble driving their son's Landcruiser. After fueling it would not come out of park. They called us, were discussing it with us a few folks on the spot for a while. Then someone else gave it a shot and it went right into gear. Hmmm. It seems Roy(FIL) wasn't putting his foot on the brake while attempting to go from park to reverse/drive/whatever. This was his first vehicle that had this wonderful safety feature.

I just replaced the switch, I didn't bypass. But those directions Alan posted are getting printed out. I'll take a pic of the location and the part later. Too damn cold here in this city now. I need to get back to the desert...

gp,

The only way we'd know for sure would be to see a pic of your ass. Ask Blake how to take one.
