Okay, you always hear of people that need valve jobs. So answer these question if you have had one done,

1.How many miles?
2.Series 1 or 2?
3.How often did you change oil?
4.What type of driving(highway or city)?

1. Have done valves on trucks ranging from 6743 miles to 100,000 miles. Had to redo one in 4300 miles but he was down in south america using different fuel
2. Series 1 and 2, RR 4.0 and 4.6, RRC, Defender
3. happens no matter how often you change the oil, have seen them stick at 3k intervals to people that never see an interval unless something else breaks
4. all types do it. It seems the harder the vehicle is run the less they stick valves. Another interesting thing is i have never had to replace heads for valve stick on a manual transmission truck.

The answer i think you'll find is that it is a design flaw LR has not repaired. The latest valves are not a tried and true fix yet but look like the most promising repair yet.

Could you get the 4.0 with a manual? I thought everything in the USA was automatic by the time the 4.0 was here?

You can find both '96 and '97 5-speed Discos, which would have the 4.0 V8. The '97s are few in number, Greg French has one. '94 and '95 5-speed 3.9 V8s are relatively more common (tho' still nowhere near in number to the autos...)


The '99D1 that I had was starting to show signs of having valve issues at 81k, which was by-far mostly highway miles, regular oil changes... the '95 that we now have has 130k on it and runs smoother than the '99 did...

i would guess that would be because manuals see higher rpms, not allowing the carbon to build up. My 5 speed 4.0 routinely see 4000-4500 rpms. We cracked my engine open right before the warranty ended to do the valves as maintnece. I was showing no signs of valve stick, but if it would have to be done, Id rather not pay for it. The thing couldnt have been any cleaner, not a speck of carbon. Ive always thought that the harder you drive these things, the better they are. They love to be beaten on.

Just had it done less than two weeks ago. 41K miles, oil changed every 3K miles, 99 D1 and about 35% to 65% highway to city. But I didn't get the 30K maintenence done though.

95 D1 at about 40k miles, automatic. premium gas, 3k oil changes. Bad part is we live at the top of a mountain, so to go anywhere, the engine essentially idles for 12 miles while we lose 4,000 ft in altitude. Good part is we run it hard in 3rd and 2nd on the way back up the hill. At 82k now, and so far the new-style valves are doing okay.

I pulled my heads to check a head gasket leak. Found that one of the exhaust valves had burned & replaced it with one of the new style.

The heads were rebuilt by ECR, I have no idea of total mileage on them, but less than 20k with me.

On freeway on-ramps, I am on Sport Mode and just stand on that gas pedal so it revs to 5K then cruise for a few minutes between 80-85 mph. Hopefully this helps plus I started using snake oil (Lucas Tune-up in a Bottle @ $3.00). It claims to clean the fuel injector and clean the top end (rid of carbon deposits). My butt dyno and ears says it works.

Maybe this is a dumb question - has anyone tried using the "massive water injection" technique to clean the carbon from the top end? This involves slowly pouring a pint or two of water into the intake while running at a fast idle.

It is reputed to work well. I have personally never tried it.

I'll try to answer these in order

1. The latest style valves have only been out since end of the '02 model year. They actually have a different exhaust valve and new, shorter valve guides. I'm not sure if they went into production but i would say it was some time in late 2002 or it began with the 2003 model year if they did.

2. The manual transmission engines also rev faster when in a neutral state vs the auto. I'm not sure but it may be less weight on the flywheel.

3. The carbon problem cannot be fixed with the "hydroclean" method. The carbon problem is from carbon build up inside the exhaust valve guide and on the valve stem. After enough collects in between the two the valve sticks open. I haven't found any other way besides removing the heads and cleaning the carbon off to fix the problem.
