Does anyone know of any good off-roading near the San Diego area? Any ideas are appreciated!

LOL

have you ever looked at LRCSD website?
- Corral Canyon (Bronco Peak and Sidewinder trails), 40 min drive from San Diego
- Los Coyotes Indian Reservation (1hr40min drive from San Diego)
- Anza-Borrego Desert (1:40 to 3hr drive from San Diego, depending on the location)
- San Bernardino Mountains (2:30-3hr drive from San Diego)
- Johnson Valley (3:30)
- Gorman OHV area (2:30)

and, of course, all Baja California's right there, starting in 20 minutes South of SD.

From another SD Disco owner, you can also explore parts of the Black Mountain area before they finish building out there. It is small but may satisfy your needs for a little while.

I work at the devo projects out there and it's gonna be a golf course soon. Also, the new ranger is nice, but not exactly interested in offroading going on.

Todd, did you see that post I put up in general?

Jack,

so Black Mtn is an urban development for good now?
that's sad, my first off-road trip was up and around the mountain. i enjoyed towing an F150 backwards for about half a mile (it was during/after a good rain), before he could get out on his own.

Black Mt. Rd still exists but it's a pretty graded track. The ranger placed phone pole barricades in front of the other trails, not that's hard to get around, but i'm sort of over the trespassing/park trashing version of offroading. It used to be a more interesting place but it's getting pretty built over. I went dove and duck hunting there as recently as this past fall.

It's worth the drive to borrego instead of Black Mt. (only about an hour to the jasper trail for me) Had a good time last weekend doing the pinyon mountain (squeeze & drop off) trail in the dark and split mountain. "Hard Top Rock" autographed my rear window but didn't break it.

Are you a member of LRCSD?
Is it worthwhile?

Hey Jack,

Thanks for the update on Black Mountain, I guess I won't be heading out there for any quick fixes now.

I am a member of the LRCSD, however I have not been to any of the meetings lately.

Todd,
I was actually asking Peter but I'm curious what anyone thinks of it.

so was it you that I spotted parked at Swami's in Encinitas a little while ago?

Jack, did you go with LRCSD?

if you're at all interested in any club participation, this is the one to be with. I've been way too busy for the last 6 months, and missed a bunch of trips including Pinyon Mtn. trail (which I like a lot). The club is rather informal, with no obligation to attend the meetings (which I would have a difficulty to meet), with excellent trail rating, and very helpful on the trail.

I am considering going to Coyote Canyon - despite numerous reports that the only difficult section of the trail was nearly "paved." It crosses the only year-round creek in Anza-Borrego Desert, which may be quite deep after a rainstorm. The trail is gated at Riverside/SD county border, but there's still about 10 miles of it (IIRC).
If you want to go, please ping on me, I am trying to keep my weekends open.

there are some photos from LRCSD trips -
Colorado, Calcite mine in AB, Bronco Peak in Corral Canyon area, Gold Mine / 2N01/2N61 near Big Bear.

I didn't go with LRCSD just myself and a companion. Luckily some underequipped but well intentioned jeepers came up behind and linked up with us. They were extremely polite as well as very scared and I helped spot them through the trail in return for using their bodies as bumpers to keep my body panels off the rocks in the squeeze.

I've done south coyote canyon twice in the past month. There are two or three water crossings and if we went this weekend in the rain they could be deep. The rocky chute afterwards is pretty fun but changes quite a bit because of so much loose rock. Depending on how things lie, it can be either quite challenging or pretty easy.

I haven't gone up the longer northern section. It is supposed to be pretty tame but at least it's long.

With rain, the Carrizo area can be pretty tough. Got my disco thoroughly stuck there a while ago.

The spot on my list to go to now is the Calcite mine. What did you think of that?

Maybe I'll go to a LRCSD meeting and check it out. I like talking to Land Rover folks and the people at Pioneer centres are pretty good for a dealership. particularly Sean Puno and Sean the Porsche salesman. However, it seemed like the outings that I saw on their website were a little on the fire road side. I'm no badass but I think that club "roadtrips" can get a little old.

My partner in crime is putting on his RTE bumper and winch this weekend and when that's done we'd like to check out some trails in Arrowhead or Big Bear, hopefully in the snow. Any recommendations for trails up there?
