Hello All,

Looking for some information about doing a front and rear 3RD Member swap on my DII, I have read the ARB install on D-90 and here, but since the axles are not removed the same way I have a few questions and would like to hear any recommendations or tips that anyone may have.

1. What will I need to do to get the DII axles to pull out far enough to allow the 3rd member to be removed, and does anyone have or know where I could find directions?
2. Are there any seals or other items I should replace? The 3rd members will already be setup with gears and lockers.
3. How long do you think it will take to remove and replace each one for someone that is mechanically inclined? The 3rd members will already be setup with gears and lockers so it is just a swap.
4. Do I need any special tools? I have a good arsenal of tools, just looking to find out if there are any special off the wall tools that I may need or large sockets over 20MM.

Anything else I should know?

Thanks :)

D2 rear ends are almost just as simple as the D1 to remove
1. Remove wheel
2. Remove caliper, mounting bracket for caliper, and rotor ( removing rotor is optional)
3. unplug ABS sensor and remove wiring from body
4. remove 4 bolts that secure hub to spindle assm
5. pull out on hub to remove

If you are just changing gears you do not have to remove the axle from the hub which is rusted together most of the time. D2 rotors also rust onto the hub. Removal of the rotor is not required but may make it a little easier. If heavy resistance is found when trying to remove the rotor it would be wise to leave it on. The big nut in the center of the hub does not need to be removed, this holds the axle to the hub.

The axle seals do not have to be replaced, these do not leak in the D2 that often so i probably would just leave them alone. The only gasket to replace is the sealer around the 3rd member itself. Only other thing would be to use loctite on the hub to spindle bolts when putting it back together.

This should not take long but i would budget a day to be safe.

Oh yea, from the 7500 mile service on the diffs have synthetic fluid.

Thanks Oliver,

"Oh yea, from the 7500 mile service on the diffs have synthetic fluid."

Are you saying to run synthetic after 7500 Miles?

Anyone else have any recomendations or tips?
