If it is a series 1 replace the alternator. Common problem. Vehicle recieves the tach signal from the alt so it is kind of a early warning device.

Hi:

Yes it is a Discovery 1. Anyone have a good used alternator for sale?

Thanks

They would have had to have made a good new one first :)

Alternators are typically easily rebuilt. I had mine rebuilt for under $50 over 3 years ago. Still works perfectly.

as a side note. did you have the serp belt replaced? if someone else installed it check the routing. improperly routed it will show a dead tach and low #'s on your alt.

I have had a few roll through the shop with a poor connection on the back of the alt for the tach signal. Even cheaper to fix than a $50 rebuild!

LISTEN TO GARRETT!

The belt can be put back on wrong, which will "almost" work, but cause jumpy tach-needles and "failing alternator" or "failiing battery" symptoms....

Check your routing first!

hi Everyone:

Thanks for the advice. It turns out that the alternator was bad. Luckily I was able to get one and get back on the road...
