Does anybody know anything about this years event? CROC has nothing on their website ( www.carolinarovers.org ) and with Easter on April 20th and a BRLRC event on May 3-4th it would be nice to know something

Greg,

Old North State said they ain't gonna do it this year. They do not have the experience nor the funds to pull such an event off. I think it is still in CROC's court...

Greg D,

If I had a 130, I'd want to wheel' it :).

Also Greg, if you see some guy in a Blue GMC pickup truck wave frantically at you, thats me .

Well, I just found this post on Guns and Rovers

Uwharrie safari 03
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folks!
I'm gettin beat to death on this subject on more than 1 BB!

I know this is a very fun & challenging event for all 4x4 owners,
as of right now there are no plans for a 03 event.

However, I will check out what campsites are open for april
weekends to support those who want to camp & ride!

I know this is kinda late in the logistics dept,
but our vols from last yr seem to have disapeered or
got the apathy bug when it came to the Vol thing!

It only takes a few folks to make an event
like this happen.

trial guides we got & need more!
cleanup crew, please help out, take it out if ya brought it in!
if ya do there's no need for them!

apathy is rampant,
thats not why rover clubs are formed!

So I guess it ain't gonna happen.

David

Dave,

This year when I joined CROC, I wrote in a letter that I would volunteer to lead trail rides. Hell, I'll even be the bitch at the booth giving out vehicle sticker numbers.

Let me know man, I'll help out.

AS long as you're not the "bitch at the booth" giving out kisses. LOL. Dang I was hoping to make Uwharrie this year too.

What can I do to help? Need any organizational skills? WebDB ? Forum? etc?

lemme know!

I just posted some love on CROC's site. In my opinion, Uwharrie is 2nd only to the MAR.

No kisses for you, fucker! :)

No to discourage volunteers, but how did that guy who got clunked on the head clearing trails last year make out? Can't recall which event he was prepping trails for, but I remember he had a serious injury.

Karen,

Actually, if I'm thinking of the same thing you are, Stuart is doing okay... but it wasn't Uwharrie, it was at the MAR the year before... driving the tractor, and a tree fell on him...

He's back at work, gotten married, was at MAR this past October, seemed to be doing well.

LOL, I'm the one who needs the headgear more than I ever would have thought - I did a flying face plant into the side of a dirt/rock hill a few weeks ago at the CORVA Poker Run. Was at a very steep, slick vertical incline. I was coming back down after spotting. 3/4 of the way down, I felt gravity taking hold, and I decided I best try to run it out (better than doing an endo and sliding down face first, LOL) Truck made it down fine, but "Kim rolled" .

Yep, KJ, LOL!!! You nailed it ... A certain "eveeeil" friend :) (yet another Steve!!) spilled the beans about the black eye (and 2 stiches on the cheek bone area would have been convienient, LOL). ... I tried to just leave it alone, but I knew a 'slpaination was in order, LOL. The story was, (I have to admit) a pretty good one (i.e. I would give anything for a video ... If ya can't laugh at yourself, well..) I really needed to repel down that hill, but was hot, I was dehydrated a bit, and we were trying to catch up, (stinkin' thinkin' LOL!!!) Greg was in the truck wondering where the heck I was when he said he saw me literally fly horizontally by - LOL!!! I have to tell you, it was the fastest I've ever gone without wheels or ski's or SOMETHING under me. I landed in a kind of spread eagle (legs) and Y (arms) position, right side of face down. Our "Steve2" witnessed the end result. Said he saw the top of my head one minute, on the vertical drop, then ... he said looked over a minute later, I was gone,,, Said he went to the edge, and he wondered what the hell I was doing to the hill down there. "WHat is she doing???" Well, he got to witness the facial carnage - he's a queazy one, bless his heart (along with strangers lined up on top of a ridge watching the descents, OMG!!!)

Yeah, I milked it with Greg for awhile,,, as in, I'll just tell the neighbors, "It was my fault, really. He had to tell me a second time." ... "Er, uh, the, uh, the house wasn't clean enough when we came home from bowlin'...." (Okay seriously, I know that is not a funny subject, but) It was definitely one for the "Hall Of Shame". On a sober note, I was fine & lucky. Another poor guy lost his fingers and god knows what else that day when he rolled his Bronco (I dunno ..., Ricky went down that hill - From the description, it sounded to me like a mechanical failure of some kind, like maybe he popped a bead on his tire or something).

Oh please, Axle, Kyle, and Ho, forgive me for my bandwidth waste here. I had a cappachinno (sp??), and I'm not used to drinking coffee, (hehe, plus some red wine ..... I'm sorry.) ..

ROTFLOLOLOL! Now Kim, THAT was funny! Not PC for me to laugh about it, but I don't care, LOL!

Sounds like a lucky thing you only did THAT much damage, ugh. I'm guessing Steve2's next incarnation will not be as an EMT?

So am I to understand that there will be no Uwharri Safari this year?

That is blasphemy!

Is there anything we can do to help change that? Maybe we can make it later in the year or something?

Has anyone gotten in touch with Greg Collins? I know he was prez. of ONSLRS and had a lot to do with setting everything up.

It just seem like sucha buzzkill!

I look forward to the safari every year!

I'd piss on a sparkplug if I thought it would help!

I too am willing to help and also willing to come down from Delaware early to help make shit happen. Volunteers come out of the woodwork when you throw up an opportunity on Dweb. Fuck the slackers and show me where to sign my John Hancock cause I'm in. Someone get a dedicated thread and/or distibution list together so we can get shit rollin.

Damn real man. If apathy is gonna take these groups over then it's only a matter of time before we accept that we're driving the
Best 4x4xFord.

Tell me what I need to do. Who's the contact for the roast pig and hushpuppies and were did the registration booth come from?

I have contacted some of the CROC officers trying to get something started. It may just end up being a more informal open weekend instead of the organized event as in the past. I'm willing to help out anyway I can to make something happen. A year without Safari just wouldn't seem right.

One of the things I had hope that we would be able to continue with rebuilding the Old North State was that the Safari would continue. Of course I didn't expect that it would be something for us to try in our first year. I funded the very first Safari to the tune of $3900.00, something I can not do now. The Old North State just can not put it together in time. I did not even consider that ONSLRS would be involved this year as we have so little to offer to the event, and we are trying real hard not to ruffle any feathers.

There has been alot of talk about an informal meet, which I think would be fun, but I would like to mention a couple of things before everyone thinks they can load up the group camp and have at it.

Per Forest Service regulations, you are only allowed to have 15 people per each of the three group sites. Beyond that, you have to file for permission with the forest to have a "special event." This will allow you to increase the number, but it means that you have to have a $500,000.00 insurance policy, with the Forest Service as the beneficiary. On top of that, it cost $4.00 per day for Saturday and Sunday for the folks to be on the trail. There is also some paperwork that has to be completd for the Forest Service.

I thought that I would pass this on. Putting this thing together was always very difficult due to all of the paper work with the government. It was worth it, but due to my travel schedule I am not in a position to help out at all this year. While I will probably prove useless, if there are any questions, give me a yell.

Dan,

Thanks for posting and your previous sacrifices to get the event happening in the past. I attended last year and had a blast. In fact, because of that event, I have met a whole crew of Rover Folks from up and down the eastern seaboard.

It's too bad that CROC and ONSLRS could not get something going. Obviously there is something happening behind the scenes that I do not understand. Living on the coast of NC, I feel like I wasted $25 bucks by joining CROC.

Questions about the costs involved etc. How much is the $500,000 policy? The organizers of the SOLAROS SAE told me that the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association insured the SAE for $60. http://www.sfwda.org/ As far as the trail fees are concerned we were told last summer at the BRLRC Summer Rally that you only needed to donate $5.00 to the bucket once for the weekend. If this is incorrect please let me know as none of the riders I saw paid for two or more consecutive days. Also, I am willing to throw my $30 in now. If those interested can register maybe we can get enough money fronted to at least guarantee we can have more than 15 freakin people. Again, if anyone would like me to call, write, email the park service let me know and I will help all I can. Dan, do you have a list of national park items that need to be satisfied? Not that this event has to be as big as last year but there's no doubting more than 15 people will show up. Thoughts?

Well Jason,

I just read the CROC site and they posted:

"To All inquiring, The official date for Uwharrie Safari is....April 25th, 26th and 27th. Group camp booked and planning on the way. Will post official registration form and information when all is sured up.

So things are looking up. They will need volunteers for clean up and such.

Jason, I checked just a few moments ago, and the fee has now climbed to $5.00 per day. Here is the link to the Uwharrie site. Maybe BRLRC was able to work some kind of deal.

Jason:

While I don't have a list of Forest Service requirements, here is what I remember.

You have to apply to hold a special event. There is a form that they have at the district ranger's office. I used to work with Jake Cebula, one of the rangers, but he died working on one of the trails last year. At the time, it cost $45.00 per site, per day in the group camp. I was required to take out $500.000.00 insurance which cost us between $750.00 and $1100.00 depending on the year and number of participants. The insurance company had a very strict release from reliability that every one had to sign. And then we paid $3.00 per participant per day for the trail fees.

That is about all I remember of the process now. If I come across something else that will be helpful, I will let you know.
Campsite fees $135.00 for each site for the weekend, for a total of = $405.00
Insurance up to = $1100.00
The Highest number of participants we had was 181, at $4.00 per day = $1448.00
Total cost to start $2953.00

There was always conversation about trying to sneak some of this stuff under the wire, trying to get out of paying it, but thankfully the right way of doing things won out.

Good luck with this. If I can be of any more help, give me a shout.

It looks like it is coming together for the Safari to happen this year. The event is being put on by Carolina Rover Owners Club (CROC) which was formed just prior to last years Safari through the combination of two clubs, NC Rovers and ONSLRS. It appears that now ONSLRS is being reformed by some previous memebers (thus all the confusion) but Safari is a CROC event. The dates look like April 25, 26, 27. Check CROCs BB for more info and to volunteer to help out. They should be posting registration information soon. Check them out at: www.carolinarovers.org

that's just because no one wanted to talk to you eric. what do you mean? myself, paul and a slew of others carivaned down last year. i saw you for a moment. we were tucked away in the corner. nice little spot. you were closer to the food for obvious reasons. only reason i am coming is for the possibility of hush puppies and pulled pork. :-) mmmmm.

Ya, and I got to dinner late too and missed out on most of it.. bummer.. That's OK though, it's all about the beer at the end of the day. :-) Of course if I do go I'll probably end up coming down alone and camping by myself again. Unless ROVERS wants to have a member group camp.
