Boy sort of feels like cheating but here goes.
Right now I love my little country bumpkin life in a cabin on a lake outside Olympia, WA. I think the cards may have me fall into Stafford, VA in the near, (too near) future.

I guess what I am looking for is a place to make home base until I can survey the area. I don't want a lease at first and do not intend to buy, just rent.

(Most of the office folk live towards DC and commute south and they say traffic is AOK that way, but a one-bedroom could be 1200! And I get s*** on for "wasting all my money" on the rover!)

My brother says live somewhere where the DC mass transit reaches, so I can get around with a bottle of bushmills and not put me and the rover into Patomic.

I don't think I am a city kid, but not suburbia and am maybe looking for a civilized, creative, town or area close to Stafford with water and open spaces.

I will offically go insane if I have to stress the Defender on 95 with those big trucks following like 4' from my bumper. I may be looking for a commuter car down there if anyone has anything (oops).
Anyhow, does anyone like it there?

Columbia, MD-
Love it after I stopped my daily commute to DC- Did it for 11 years, now I work in the opposite direction (Baltimore City).

*Not trying to be a smart A&& or funny, but even this topic has been discussed and is archived-

Get ready for a different lifestyle- Not a drastic change like living in NY City, but a stressful daily grind. Even the weekends in this area contain traffic jams and overcrowding- Oh how I love heading to Skyline Drive on the weekends. I prefer living in the middle (DC-Baltimore) just so I can have directional choices during the week and weekends. I still commute to DC twice a week, just to check on my employees in downtown DC, and in the near future will be relocating the entire shabang closer to Columbia MD-

To me, it would make since to spend about 6 months here before you lock down a specific location......
I've been here for almost forever, with the exception of being born and raised in Greensboro, NC- Once you are here, it's hard to think about living elsewhere- thats the weirdest thing about the METRO area to me.

Thanks 94,
One of the things that seems cool is being able to get just about anywhere on the east coast in a day. If I am south of DC, and heading south, traffic would seem a non-issue, whereas going north could be a headace and have some planning involved?
I have a few friends in the Charlstoon/Myrtle area so that will be a destination as well as Shenandoah as my friend worked in the park there and loved it.
Good luck and thanks.
I will check the archive/

if you are going to be in Stafford working, then you may want to look into buying a place (if you are content being down that way). Within 5 years, that area will be the next Woodbridge and you will double/triple your house price. Problem is, there is no social life to speak of down in Stafford/Aquia Harbor/Fredericksburg. Live near the Springfield Metro if you need more outlets and want to just rent, then you are commuting south, near 95, have public access to DC and the rest of the NOVA area and it isn't as expensive as North of 66. Still going to be a 35-40 min commute to Stafford though. Email me if you want any specifics. Used to live outside Montclair/Quantico area and actually worked in Stafford for a very brief time.

Where ever you decide to live do it where you spend the least amount of time on 495. I95 is nothing until you get to the 495 mixing bowl and even 66 as bad as it is won't touch 495 for pure stress durring anything close to rush hour or as already mentioned even on weekends 495 sux!

I'll second what Al says. One of our data centers was in reston ... I had to leave Richmond at 5 am and with traffic those 90 miles take 2 hours, but the 12 miles I had on 495 took another entire hour! No thanks!
