I got a 2" lift kit from RTE for my 96disco. (i love it btw =)
It was the first time I'v ever messed with suspension systems so it was quite an adventure. Every thing went well enough with info from here, until I was putting the last bolts back on. The ones that hold the shock towers. Well one of them snapped. So there is only 3 holding it on now.
My question is that, should I be concerned about this? To fix it I would have to take the spring off and on again..

On another note, I broke half the bolts of the front mud flaps when removing them. The head of the rather large bolt that holds the rear step on also snapped when i tried to loosen it. Did LR try cutting costs and use hollow bolts or something?

Well, there are 4 studs on the shock tower rings for a reason. I did the same thing once, and decided to replace it to be on the safe side. It's not an expensive part, and it would be a bitch to weaken the other studs and have the shock tower come lose on you in the middle of BFE.

Jesse I used to snap bolts off, I never thought it was tight enough, too much brawn)
Then I bought a torque wrench, this solved the problem

You don't have to remove the spring completely to just replace the shock tower ring, though. Loosen the bottom bolt on the shock, and the remaining 3 bolts that hold the shock tower, then pull the tower out with the shock in it. Do all that before you jack up the car. Then before you jack it up, put 4-5 big, heavy duty hoseclamps around a couple of the coils, that will keep the spring compressed enough so that when you jack up the truck, you can slip out the old ring and get the new one in there. Then drop the car down, replace the shock tower, tighten the studs with your new torque wrench (Any good hardware store will carry them), tighten the bottom shock bolt, and you are done. If you want to be really safe, use a spring compressor in stead of the hose clamps.

ratchets break things

good rule of thumb if you dont have a torque wrench is to do final tightening with a standard wrench...its not a coinsidence that big wrenches are long and small ones are short.

just dont do that with those new style long wrenches or you will break shit.

i broke 3 out of 4 while removing the nuts on my last suspension job. i just ground them down, drilled them out and put in Stainless steel bolts thru the old holes.

As easy as that fix Rob described is (I've done the same thing on one of mine) everybody missing a bolt or two should go ahead and do it.

"everybody missing a bolt or two should go ahead and do it."

And how do you propose getting it off when you need to?

There is a reason they are welded on the one side.

I thought I was the only one to break bolts like that. My wife is always teasing me about it. I just can't seem to ditch my two best friends, Brute force and Ignorance. When all else fails use a bigger hammer.

he he, I was helping a buddy take the rear sway bar off his cherokee. Eventually I had to resort to beating the wrench w/ a 3lb sledge, man I miss my dad's impact wrench.

it is a minor in convenience but better than driving around with nothing.

i was able to get a wrench in behind mine to hold it from spinning when i was tightening it. i assume i'll just do that same methode in 5 years when i need a new suspension.

I've been running on three for about 60K miles. I see these bolts broken quite often and expect to see it happen. My reasoning over not going too far out of my way to replace the ring is that the worst that will happen is no shock action. Given the condition of the shocks I removed, there would be little to no difference between breaking the three remaining studs versus driving with badly worn shocks. If one feels like replacing them before the shocks or springs need replacement, by all means, do it, but if it is going to be a special job just to replace them, I don't see the need for it.

Now that I've said that, every time someone comes to me for lift or shock work, I always add an additional $35.00 for a pair of shock retaining rings because I will replace them as a matter of course on someone else's truck. I suspect my liability insurer would appreciate this.

Peace,
Paul
