Hey People,

Since I am in Philly for the year, I am looking for a place in PA to go camping during the Memorial Day Holiday. Hopefully some place I can hit some trails, do some fishing, and yes of course; consume large amounts of Yuengling.

Open to suggestions or stories.

Thanks,

Paul

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but Memorial day weekend is the most crowded weekend of the year to go camping. Make sure you pick a spot away from the crowds.

Thanks Neal,

Every year I usually end up at Ohiopyle State Park or up in the Pocono's for Whitewater rafting and Camping. This year I was looking for something different, maybe someplace I can scar the Earth; oops I mean tread lightly!

you ever been to Jim Thorpe? just hop on 476 north and you are there in no time. there are a few state parks nearby. nice little town and plenty of camping......some legal and some 'find your own' stuff. you could even head east into NJ (yes i said it) to the pine barrens. ohiopyle is a hell of a drive from Philly too.
you could always come to state college and pitch a tent on the front lawn of a nice dormatory. :) i mean talk about roughing it.
or just head north to the pocono's. LOTS of places to camp there. and when you want to come out at night from the tent for some drinks head to Barley Creek Brewery just down the road from Camelback Ski Area. GREAT place. brown antler ale is most delicious.
we just spent the weekend wheeling at a members hunting camp on 1500 acres. very nice.
you have the delaware state forest and promised land state park up there.
but as you move more central to the state and farther north the state is just filled with state parks. some i am certain will not be crowded. i mean just get out a map and take a look........the whole central and north central part of the state is all parks. even my office is surrounded by state parks. around here it is camp where you like. just no wheeling though.

Hickory Run State Park and Ricketts Glen is nice too but no place to wheel bring a mountain bike instead. Garretts sugestion of the Pine Barrens is a good one, you might be able to entice some of the NJ D-webers into joining you for some wheeling.

Poconos; "Hog Back" mountain. Near Shawnee / Bushkill & "Hidden Lake" nearby has always been the place to go. No overnight camping. Patrolled. Havn't been there in years, so it may be differant now. Nearby campground; Otter Lake Camp Resort "camping it softly" with indoor & outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna, laundrys at bath houses... Great fishing, record bass... no license required, now is catch and release only. Packed on holiday weekends. Not bad during the week.
1/2 hr. drive to "Promised Land" State Park with overnight primitive camping; Snowmobiles only on trails...out house and well pumps, also has lake, boat rentals. Entire area is heavily wooded with our own brand of glacier rock as seen in the Canadensis pics. That area is minutes away from Promised Land's 3 camping areas.
Hint; Developments being built in this area start with logging roads. That's the best places to wheel I've found. Worried about tearing up the dirt? Those city folks moving in are only going to build septic systems there anyway. Hotwire one of those articulated loaders on a Sunday...yee haw that's wheel'n.

The "Hogback" has been closed a number of years . The NPS service took over the Deleaware national recreation area and closed it off . Be careful on posted or private property in the Promised Land Area / Deleware state forest as the fines can get step .
