Hi everyone - I'm about to embark on a quest to install a new aftermarket head unit. I got a quote from a local shop and the guy there said that there are no dash kits made for the Disco II, so he would have to customize something and wanted to charge me an arm & a leg for it. I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether there are actually any sources for a dash kit for the Disco II to install a regular DIN-sized unit? I know there are others here who have installed aftermarket units - what did you do? Thanks!

Your local stereo shop is trying to rip you off! There is no dash kits made for the Disco II because you don't need one to put in a standard DIN size stereo.

If you take out the stock stereo (at least the H/K ones) - you'll notice that the faceplate is larger than a DIN, but the actual body of the HU that goes into the dash is just a standard DIN.

There is a little trim piece you can get from the dealer (like $10) to cover up the 1/2 DIN that will now be exposed when you put in the aftermarket one....

You might look to a different stereo shop if they really told you that would have to charge you to build a custom kit!

Good luck!

Will

Wow - that is good to know. Does anyone know of a source for this trim piece? I'd rather get it online if possible. Thanks!

Duane, just got through installing an aftermarket deck in my wife's D2. Had the dealer order the part but it wasn't the right one(covered the entire hole like it didn't have a deck). Anyhow, after installing the deck with the trim ring included with it, there is only like 1/8" or so at the bottom where a couple of screws show. We covered this with a very small piece of black carpet(usually used for carpeting speaker boxes). I'll try and remember to snap a picture tonight when my wife gets home. Also, be prepared to lose use of your speakers in the rear door, and to look at some crazy plugs from your factory amp. We tried to use the PAC steering wheel interface deal so my wife wouldn't lose use of her steering wheel controls, but even after 30 minutes or so of talking with tech support at PAC we still couldn't get it to work. We went with a total of:-1-New deck, -2-150 watt Zapco amp -3-small box in the rear with a JL 10-W-0, the sound is pretty amazing now. We ran protection to the tweeters that were tied in-line up front and the rear to avoid blowing them. I'm not sure that you would have to, my friend who owns the stereo shop just suggested that as a just in case.. Good luck.. and i'll try and remember that picture.. Later.. Rob

I'll take a picture of the setup that Will is talking about.

I have an aftermarket deck in my D2 and bought the trip piece that covers up the bottom portion of the OEM deck opening.

Don't let your stereo shop tell you otherwise. No kit is needed.

I'm very interested in the part number for this trim piece. I have an installation scheduled for tuesday and this would be a lot easier than what he was looking at doing.

Also, the installation guy seems to think he can do the install utilizing hte stock amps withought losing any functionality. Is this not the case?

I can't find the part#!!! Lost the receipt!
I remember I found it doing a search on this board, but I'm not sure whats going on with the search utility these days!!!

But yes - you can just replace the headunit and leave the amp as-is.

Sorry -Will

Thanks so much for all the input guys. Robert and Craig - pics would be wonderful! Also, Chris (and others), is this trim piece a Land Rover part? I emailed the guys at Rover Connection and they had no idea what I was talking about. Where did you buy it? Thanks!

Robert - that sucks that you couldn't get the PAC to work. I was counting on you to figure it out for me so I would have it easy! What was the issue? Also, when you say lose the speakers in the rear door, are you talking about the subs? Why do you lose those? I've heard they're not that great anyway, but I was wondering what the issue was.

Duane-

The trim piece is a LR part. The LR Part number is FHY100290LNF

Tell your dealer that it is a plastic finishing piece for the Harmon Kardon premier stereo system in the 2002 D2.

In the below picture, the yellow arrow tips are on the finishing piece. It retains a factory look and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Text description

No trim piece, just the carpet, looks nice in my opinion..

My friend owns a stereo shop and has been a friend for more than the 20 years he's been doing this. With the help of PAC he couldn't get the PAC interface to work.. I know it has worked elsewhere.. but we couldn't get it to work.. Anyhow.. Later.. Rob

i'm going for the PAC, too. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Did you have to replace every single wire and speakers? I looked at getting a new head unit, but it seemed like a very expensive process.

Just had to re-wire existing speakers but you do lose the 2 speakers in the rear door as you have to by-pass the factory amp to install an aftermarket deck. I wouldn't bother to replace if Land Rover would have wised up and put a CD player in the dash, have to say I didn't understand that my '97 Honda Prelude came with the CD player and my wife's '99 D2 which cost I'm sure every bit of 35k comes with a tape deck.. doesn't make alot of sense to me..

I replaced everything. Not one bit of that piece of crap stock stereo system is left in my truck.

It wasn't cheap, but very worth it. I couldn't imagine having to listen to that teeny tiny stereo for 3+ hours to the trailhead.

my installer seems to think that he can do my install w/ the factory amps w/o losing any speakers.

I'll eventually replace everything, but this is the most cost effective thing to do until i recover from my down payment. ;)

Well, now I don't know what to do, because the trim piece and the carpet piece both look fine to me. By the way, British Pacific's Fall 2002 parts list which is online lists that trim piece as $7.97, so it looks like whatever decision I make will be a fairly cheap one (THAT's a first!). Thanks again everyone and, Chris, let me know who that PAC turns out. Also, Robert, would you necessarily lose the rear subs if your head unit has sub preouts?

Chris - What your installer is refering to is exactly what I've done for now. I just replaced the HU, but I'm using the factory amp and all the speakers still work just as they would the the factory setup. You can use the pre-outs from the new HU and solder RCA jacks to ends of the inputs to the factory amp and down stream from there everything works the same....

I'm also doing my upgrade a piece at a time, because at some point it may be good enough for my taste without replacing everything!

Duane - the reason why Rob lost the subwoofer was because he bypassed the factory amp - and all the speakers are driven from it. The set of rear input wires into the factory amp are shared by both the subwoofer in the rear door and the backseat speakers. He put in his own wiring from his own amp to the fromt and rear speakers. Even if you have sub preouts, you still need 2 channels from an amp to drive the woofers in the back.

Hope this helps!
