On my 96 Disco, I have what I believe is the original steering dampener (damper?) Truck has 63K miles. Since this is the only Disco I've driven, I don't have any idea whether it needs replacing, it just seems like I should replace it and it wouldn't be too much work while I'm underneath putting on a front diff guard.

I've got Bilsteins all around, should I stick with Bilstein for the steering shock or go OME? Who sells the Bilstein steering dampener?

Or, should I just keep the $60 and buy a tank of gas?

I ran bilsteins on my 88RRc but a OME dampener. I thought the OME was beefer and I got it for last than a bilstein dampener.

Why don't you remove your dampener and inspect it? If it isn't leaking, seems to go in and out smoothly (and with resistance), and the bushings are in good shape, put it back on and let it go a few more years.

Shocks and dampeners usually fail because they start to leak or the bushings fail. If yours has neither of those problems, you probably wouldn't notice much difference if you replaced it.

The lifespan on the stock damper is likely about 20-50k at best. I would personally replace it when I replace the stock shocks. However, you might not really need to as mentioned above(if not leaking). However the after market dampers like OME do offer quite a bit more damping.

Might wish to relocate it as well, but that is another topic.

Or just take the crazy thing off. Think of the weight you will save.

It is easy to take off.
Take it off and pull it out then push it back in. It should give resistance or be hard. If it has no leaks and is still stiff than it is still good.
I agree with replacing it when replacing shocks but that is just me.

I have just fitted an Old Man EMU on my '95 @85K, it makes all of the difference. Look for steering vibration especially over expansion joints or similar uneven road conditions. Steering can deteriorate over time and you not notice it, until you fit a new one. An EMU cost me 63 bucks, fit it in 5 mins or less, no jack required.

I agree with Ian. I got OME from Nathan and it really makes a difference in the way D1 drives. You're probably gonna do it eventually so go on and enjoy it.

Do not take it off if you highway drive- these trucks can get an oscillation in the front wheels that will surprise you if you've never had it happen. Mine works great now (course did the steering box too and that was the big culprit)

Rock on!
