Anyone ever done this? Currie sells them for about 2000 compete with a locker. After upgrading the axles in the rover axle and putting a air locker and all mods what kind of cost am I looking at.

You planning on doing the labor yourself?
A detroit locker being the cheapest, I'll go out on a limb and say a locker and new axles could be done for less than $1200 depending on what locker you go with, where you source the parts, and how much work you do yourself (you'll have to figure labor for somebody setting up your third member, however).

With the 9", $2000 doesn't include the labor/fabrication to modify it to fit your current suspension set-up, nor does it include the new wheels you will have to purchase to fit the non-Rover bolt pattern.

there is a race car company in Wis that sells component axles based on the ford 9" third member

all the parts to do a 9" with 2"40 spline axles with wildwood disc's and figuring a $695 arb would still only be about 3K front 2.5K rear

and you'd never ever break a axle again

I'll try to get some info and post it...they arent on the web.

Speaking of axles, I know its crazy but I was kicking around the idea of swapping in Volvo 303 potal axles on to my D2. Anyone know of a source? Killer axles have the Unimog portals but those are much too heavy. If its going to be done 303's would be the way to go.

I have seen portal axles on a custom off orad only vehicle here in colorado. I picked up an add at one of the local 4x4 showes. The shop located in denver was only asking about 1200 per axle but you had to have at least 40 inch tires for it to work on the street

Well, I've been doing some research on the 303s. From what I've read so far they come in two gear ratios the "fast" (5.97:1) and the "slow" (7.10:1). For apparent reasons the fast 303s are more desirable for street/trail use but if you had a dedicated rig the slow 303s would be fine. The gearing is still high even on the fast 303s, consider that I want to run 35"/36" tires, and I would regear the tranfer case if possible.
Hmmmm, lots to mod, but I think it could be done.

So far, the best I could find is $3600.00 for a set in 5.97:1 gearing. I'm scrounging for the money as we speak, and the guy is in Virginia, definitly worth the drive down, a good weekend road trip. He has a pair of the 7.14:1 left, $3400.
