I'm looking to make a trip to Big Bear or Arrowhead relatively soon and would love to hear about any trails you have enjoyed. If we get snow we'll tackle some easier trails and count on the white stuff to make it interesting otherwise we'll look for something a bit harder. Any good trails that lifted discos with bumpers and winches can do with open diffs? The gallery pics look good, which trails are those? Thanks for your help and happy trails.

Jack,

there are hundreds of trails in SBD mountains.
as of two days ago, there was almost no snow left anywhere (it may change quickly, though).
When it's dry, with 2" of lift and 245/75s and open front and rear you can do practically all trails in this area.
You need a very good map, however, USGS topos are almost useless, as are regular road maps.
Without snow cover, you can do
- Holcomb Creek (3N93), long, with two "rock gardens"
- John Bull (3N10), 3mi long, mostly rocks but nothing ugly
- 2N61 from 2N01 to Hwy.38 (some rocks, some ruts,
some off-camber joy)
- Lightning Peak (off Hwy.38) - reasonably long (3 hour round-trip from BB), with last 200 yards that I decided not to drive in the Disco
- Deep Creek (3N34, between BB and Arrowhead), some rocks, but nothing gnarly
- Dishpan Springs (I've never been there myself)
- Gold Mountain (3N69, one rocky spot, very scenic)
- Pilot Rock (2N17x) - nice'n'easy, except for one long anf ugly hillclimb. I have not heard of any rovers that made it up there with open diffs.
(I am NOT taking my disco there)

John Bull is more difficult East-to-West, and Deep Creek - West-to-East.

Snow changes everything. With a foot of packed snow, a graded dirt road 2N71 North of the BB Lake becomes impassable without chains.

check http://3rj.com/sbd.htm so you could visualize the trails, and there's 100x more photos here and on EE site.

good luck,

Peter
p.s. I am planning on spending the next weekend at Big Bear, too.

Thanks.
Looks like quite a few good recommendations. It's supposed to rain here in the middle of the week but I'm not sure that the snow line will be low enough for Big Bear or Arrowhead.

Will you be venturing out by yourself or going with a group of rovers or other 4x's?

Is 3rj your site? Are you really a jeep guy in sheep's clothing?

LOL

i will have an "inside scoop" on snow cover by the end of the week :-)

venturing out - i may be alone, or may be with my brother, may bring the Disco or the jeep. speaking of which, i have two rovers and two jeeps, all of which are driven daily. so i guess it's a bad case of split personality.

I am heading up there this Friday, and I will be heading out on the trail Saturday to test my new suspension that Peter helped install.

Jack, let me know if you are headed up there.

It looks as if the snow level will hold above 7000. I'll post again as things change. Look for me in Big Bear this weekend as well.

Well, this sounds like it could be a plan. My usual rover buddy can't do anything this weekend, but I've recruited a copilot/spotter and I'd love to meet up and do a few trails with some other San Diego rovers if anyone is interested. I'll shoot you all an email.

You won't see any snow until (maybe) Sunday. Snow level expected then at 7000, but only a 30% chance.
