Hey Barrett,

I live on the coast in Jacksonville and Steve Sherman lives in Fayetville (in that area at least).

I have been talking to my friends in Philly and the ball is rolling on getting a list together for meeting up at Uwharrie sometime. Obviously with the Uwharrie Thread, there are other groups doing the same.

I am seriously considering moving my family from Myrtle Beach to the Charlotte area.

Brad and Max...Got any advice? Do you like the area? What DON'T you like about it?

Thanks.

I'm in Charlotte as well.

Greg, what line of work are you in? ALl I can say is Charlotte has been VERY good to me. I've had offers to go North, South, and out West, but I'm not leaving. As far as I'm concerned, Charlotte has everything that I've ever needed, and there's alot of opportunity here.

I'm always up for a trail ride and I'm looking forward to see what happens with the Safari.

What can you NC guys tell me about Apex and the areas to the south-west of Raleigh-Durham? I'm entertaining a move to NC and would like some input on schools, neighborhoods and your impressions on quality-of-life in general. Thanks in advance!

LOL Dave,

I ran Sunday, Monday, and will hit the streets again tomorrow.

Steve,

The trailer hitch is very nice. I installed it and have bought the RN rear recovery shackle. We'll see what happens this weekend when I head up to WV for snow ops.

Greg D.

I teach high school. Finding a job will be no problem. How are the neighborhoods? Is there a good community feeling? I know houses are cheaper than here, so that's a good thing.

What areas should I avoid moving to?

We are going there to look around again next weekend.

Greg,
I'm in High School, what a coincidence. I go to Myers Park, and I would higly recommend teaching here. That is a little biased of an opinion, but I think you would see what I mean. Our campus is gorgeous...15 buildings instead of 1 big one like all the other schools. As far as where to live...I'd look in the Southeast part of Charlotte. Maybe even a little into Union County. The homes are nice and big, yet inexpensive...relatively. Lots of trees, and that seems to be the direction the city is growing in, so it would be a good investment as well. Keep us updated on the search. I'm sure we could help you out if need be.

Yes, South or SE area is really nice. I live in Matthews, which is just east of Charlotte. When we build again (5-6 yrs), it will be in Union county. Think about working for Union County schools. My wife used to work in Char-Meck school system, but now works for Union County schools, and will never go back. They still make you feel like one of the family, whereas in the Char-Meck system, you tend to be treated like just another number. My (actually, my wife's) $.02 worth.

Greg French,

I go to a private school in SE Charlotte. I think it is great and the staff like it too. One of the things I discovered about being in public school was that it was.....taxing on the teachers. The private sector can offer more for you, yet can be a rewarding job. Also, my school is near many subdivisions and it usually takes me 10 minutes to get to school (4 minutes if no traffic). I know many of my teachers walk to school, this may suit your tastes or not.

Neighborhoods range. Like mine, everyone keeps to themselves really. I think the southeast of Charlotte is one of the best places to be, although there are many other places that are good. Here, I am very close to everything I will ever need (except the 4 wheel parts America store :-(). Heck, even the bloody LR dealership is within 15 minutes of my house. Soon we will be able to open up a new outer beltway that can cut down trip time by a lot (instead of 45 minute drive, a 10 minute drive). Uhwarrie is close, only about 1 hr and 25 min from my house (note, this is by Series 109 rover mind you...).

Many people love Charlotte a lot, I like it ok. Come up and see for yourself, you will find out when you come....

BTW, What subject do you teach?

Max,
One thing to consider: your teachers at private school make a fair amount less money than my teachers in public school do. What school do u go to by the way? I go to MP.
Brad

PS - the dealership here is better for little more than $4 plastic body clips.

I am in Winston-Salem/Clemmons. Pretty much anyplace in NC is good to live in...just depends on what you want. The bad thing is that teacher salaries suck, we are one of the lowest paid states in the nation. Plus the insurance isn't hitting on much. My mom is a librarian so I get to here about it all :-)

Greg French:
I spent my formative HS years in a little area south of Charlotte called Indian Land, in a neighborhood called Black Horse Run. No, it's not a theme park or casino, but it is a smallish community with good schools (I think) just across the border in SC. When I was there it was definitely rural living but Pineville or Rock Hill were only 15 minutes away and Charlotte roughly 30 minutes.

I think prop taxes are lower in SC and generally housing costs down there might be a little better. I was there last summer for a HS reunion, I couldn't believe how things had changed going south out of Pineville and Indian Land now has yet another new school (the old school was new when I was there).

Will...
Believe it or not, NC salaries are a great deal higher than SC! That is one of the main reasons we are moving. The other is so my wife can go back to school. She likes Winthrop's art program.

I teach Physical science, Biology, Marine Science, Ecology...and my wife teaches Art.

Max...Thanks, but I don't really want to teach in a private school. I have been in the public school system for 6 years now and love it.

We have looked at houses and they are much less expensive than here at the beach!

Thanks everybody! If you see my Yoda-colored rig driving around next weekend, flag me down! I'm probably lost!

You are right about how this area has changed Michael. I live in the Ballantyne area which was just trees and farm land when you were here. I have been here for about 13 years and this area has exploded, all the way to the state line!

I am living in a half-way house in Cary. Basically under house arrest except am allowed work release every day. The warden does allow me to take a few weekends each year for off-raoding. But I can't mount an axe to my roof rack or anything like that.

Also have a vacation home in Blowing Rock on Sunset Drive. Sometime soon I may organize a weekend with some moderate off-roading near there. The house will accomedate up to 5 families.

Last year I did a group Rover outing to Ocracoke Island which was a big success. I might do this again in 2004. My thoughts are to rent the biggest house on the island. This is much cheaper than individuals renting motel rooms. And I think it would be even more fun that way.

Max,

I'm very close to moving back to Charlotte for a job and wanted to know more about the areas between Charlotte and Uwharrie. Indian Trail looks like it has good schools - how rural is it down there? Thanks to anyone who has good information on this - I want to know what areas to look at specifically if I come back to house-hunt.

Cheers,

Erik, my sister-in-law and her husband live in Indian Trail. There are some nice areas(neighborhoods, developments, etc.), and then there are some rural areas that are more secluded, but nice also. Just depends on what you're after and how far you want to drive if you work in Charlotte. Definitely worth looking into.

I'm not a big fan of planned, gated communities or golf for that matter. That game is a financial distraction from the Rover.

I'm hoping to get into the market down there for between $150 - $175k for four bedrooms. Would you call this realistic? Just how rural is it out there between Indian Trail and say, Albemarle area / Anson, Stanly & Cabarrus Counties?

Well, those areas are getting pretty rural for me. I like access to Charlotte and its surrounding areas. I don't think your price range is realistic for that size home, unless it's in a very rural setting. But again, that's not my area of specialty. Just speaking from experience.

I'm in Elizabeth City NC.
Only wheeling here is Outer Banks or GWNF in VA. Otherwize, Uwharrie is the next closest.

Nothing to add to the Charlotte part of the disc but wanted to add my $.02 to the NC list.

There are a lot of guys down here in wilmington. We have several customized RR classics, Several modified D-90s and of couse several discos, and a one of a kind 2002 yellow 110 with the 300tdi motor, probably saw us at MAR. Charlotte can't beat the beach.

Ken, definitely know a lot of the rover people here in town. You were probably by the serpenterium, he owns one also. We are planning a trip to Uwharrie this spring once they open, will probably bring six or more rovers. The weather is great but wheeling in the sand gets a little old. Can't wait till MAR again. I have a 97disco and a 90RR, the RR is becoming my trail rig as we speak. Look me up if you are back in town.

I'm in Chapel Hill. There's a lot of rovers here, but most of 'em are sorority girls driving them like bats out of hell. Not much in the way of off-roading nearby. I don't know if there's anybody on here from Chapel Hill or not. Anyway, looks like there's a lot of us Tar Heels.

That trail in Matthews...if you are downtown in the town and turn on that street towards the railroad tracks (Renfrow Hardware will be on the right, just a bit before the tracks). Turn right on the street right before the railroad and go straight for a mile and a half or so. You'll know if it's the right road if you see a post office w/ a bunch of old jeeps on the right. You'll cross over the railroad tracks eventually and soon thereafter there are some houses on the left. Just a bit after the last house on the left is the beginning of the trail. There's an electrical pole or something of the sort right there. Have fun and be careful...we've swamped many a car back there.

Another trail is off the new Rea Road extention. Good little trail. There's usually a truck or two that got swamped back there that they just had to leave to get a wrecker to come get. If you head out on Rea Road and go past Stonecrest and keep going, you'll come to a point where it opens up into a huge expanse on the left. Just a short way after the trail starts on the left. You have to cross over the median and just go up and over the curb to get on the trail...you'll see all the tracks. It's where my sis's bf got stuck in his jeep sunday night when it sleeted and I blew a tire trying to get to him...so we spent 2 and a half hours getting out of that mess while it sleeted a solid .75"

Brad, FWIW, the trail in Matthews is private property and many people have gotten ticketed for being back there (my neighbor's son is one).

Also, "tearing up" construction sites doesn't do any of us any good. It only solidifies the stereotypical "four wheeler". Not preaching to you, but it's much better to keep it on dedicated trails. Besides, what challenge is there in sliding around digging ruts in the dirt and mud?

Hey guys, I live out in Greenville NC for you guys East of I-95. Let me know if you want to get a group together. I'd love to tag along.

I grew up just outside of Charlotte, and then moved to Raleigh. Both are wonderful areas. That is why both are full of diverse backgrounds.

Wilmington definitely has a great LR dealership. I have horror stories about Leith in Cary. Wilmington NC is extremely nice. Better than anything florida has to offer. just my .02.

Greg,
My definition of "tearing up construction sites" is not your typical 16 year old stock wrangler kid's idea. I'll go find somewhere out in the boondocks where a development is planned but nothing has been done yet (no tilled dirt or anything...just grassy areas and woods) and go explore a bit, climb up any hills I can climb, etc. It's not exactly Uwharrie or other legal trails, but I don't tear up any work that's been done. The trail off Rea is a really good one, provided you don't get stuck after it's been raining. The first half mile or so is easy as long as u keep momentum up. None of the puddles are higher than the door sill.

Yeah, I knew one of the guys that went to LR Wilmington when it first started. If I'm not mistaken, it's owned by the people that have LR Greensboro, and they're great guys to deal with. I've heard horror stories about Cary, so I try to avoid them. I found a guy here in Chapel Hill that works on them, so I'm gonna try him out. I'll let ya'll know how he is if anybody in the area is looking for somebody. Also, if anybody has someone already that they go to around here, I'd appreciate the suggestion.

LR Cary I think they take advantage of the fact that they are the only dealer in the triangle. LR Wilmington have always been great. Last year my passenger side regulator broke, The service manager and I proceeded to fix it ourselves. In the end he took off for the labor. As for Flying Circus I thought they were kind of high but they were very nice. Hey Phillip, I was wondering about Rover Clubhouse do you know any others who have had service done there? Let me know since I need to have my 90k done.
