I'm looking to buy a 99 or 00 just off lease and wonder what you folks have found when trying to deal with a Land Rover dealership. The one near me has something of a monopoly and there is a sister dealership 50 or so miles South but they swap inventory and share web sites. I'm sure I couldn't get them to work against each other.

In general though, what have you learned about buying a Certified LR? Are the prices firm? I've tried buying a Certified BMW from my local monopoly Bimmer dealership and ended up going out of state. They were thousands above average and their cars even had higher than average miles. All you Disco drivers didn't pay full asking price did you?

Thanks

Actually I did. Tried to wheel and deal but no luck at all. I did end up paying the sticker price. I did however feel that i got my moneys worth. I also got 2 land rover hats, 2 LR keychains, All around carpeted floor mats, spare tire cover, and a Land Rover Adventures VHS tape. Much more than any other dealer I have delt with has done.

Even if they are owned by the same organization, you can still play them off. Here in Chicago, Bill Jacobs owns three (soon to be four) dealerships. We got significantly different offers on the same vehicle from two of the three dealers.

I just bought a 2003 about 2 months ago. It took me about 45 days to get them to sell me the 03 SE w/ winter package for 36k AND I got a $1,200 brush bar out of them. I played 2 dealerships against each other and got 2 leasing companies involved as well. In the end I financed with my my bank. Buying a car is definately a chess match..... keep pushing and pushing and pushing. Always smile =)

Best deal is not to deal with the dealership!

Bri

If I don't deal with the LR dealer can I still get the extended factory warranty from them? I'm not going where there is no warranty for my first LR.

There are extended warranties to be had from vendors other than LR if that is your gig. It is likely that you will pay a premium for the vehicle and the warranty through the dealership. It is however, less effort.

The dealer here in Phoenix is a "No Hassle" dealership, which also means no-haggle. You pay sticker. Their used disco's (1-2 years 20-30k mi's) were all going for around $28-30K, which I thought was high. Apparently new 2002 SE's were selling for the price of an SD model, once the 2003's hit the floor, tho. I work for one of Ford's "preferes suppliers", so I get a discount! Got a new SD for $31K with rear air, instead of about $35-36K sticker price.

It is all market driven. Around here you can get a deal. 1999 DII with ~40k and some kit can be had for $20k. Don't be afraid to shop out of market. The only downside is if you service at a dealer that you did not buy from you normally can't get a loaner in factory warranty, but under certified warranty you can get a free rental as the dealer gets reimbursed.

As far as warranties from a dealer you can buy an assured as long as you still have one month and 1000 miles left in factory. After that all you can buy is a driveline which is not as comprehensive.

Hey Ron, Thanks for that info. So I can buy the full factory extended warranty as long as I get a LR with the original one in effect. Just no loaner truck. Hmmm. Yes, I envy you Easterners when it comes to auto selection and pricing.

Nice job benefit there Scott.

I think I'll see if my dealership will deal and if not, I'll go through the hassle of selling our BMW 525iT outright. I'm willing to take a loss on the selling/trading end but I'm not going to buy at high NADA value when the market is flat.

Cheers,
