As I was rolling away from the tollbooth and raising my left drivers window, I heard a clunk in the door and my power window quit. The window is now free and unconstrained in the frame (I can move it up and down with my hand but its natural tendency is to follow gravity and come down) with the window motor still whining if I actuate it.

Given a '97 Disco, how do I get the door assembly open to see what's going on? Anyone had this problem before?

Your help is immeasurably appreciated.

The window regulator broke one of the plastic rollers. See the tech section for a inexpensive repair or you can buy the whole regulator assm from the dealer

I think this exactly happen to me (disco '96). The window just completely fell and is free. My problem was that the gears wielding (unlike the rear, its one piece) on the driver side was lacking, and the wielding just broke, so the gear basically fell off (maybe this is the problem.). This happen one night, and i had to fix it at school because I didnt want to go park at home in the ghetto and get ran-sacked. anyways, how I end up fixing it was I unscrewed the handle bar and the speaker from the side. The I carefully pulled the big plastic wall/panel off. There are no screws I believe, just plastic pins(?). Then remove the plastic sheet linning from the black goo. I notice that there was a long curve gear piece that fell off and sitting on the bottom of the door. If yours is the same problem, heres the fix: It was a pain in the ass to fix since I did not remove the whole unit. I raise the window all the way up manually, and taped it so it will not fall (watch out, it it falls it the arms could hurt u). You'll see on the bottom of the arm has some wield spots. I drilled holes into the spots and also on the gear itself (make sure the holes are accurate, the gear must align into the gear slot simular to the rear assembly- http://www.discoweb.org/rearwindowregulator/image019.jpg). I suggest making one hole and put a screw into it, align it to the gear slot, then make the other holes. Once u have the sccrews in, make sure they are not too long, because it will hit the other arm section when the windows come down. If it hits on the way down, use a file or angle grinder and shave the bolt (or nut) head thinner until it freely slides by the other arm section. Raise the window up and down before to see how the arms work first. all and all, its a pain, but now my window works wonders. hope this helps.
