$800 sounds about right for the stock replacement tires for a DI. They're expensive as crap because they're made exclusively for LR, but they're not that good to begin with.

You can get far better aftermarket tires for much less, but that's been discussed ad nauseum on other parts of this bulletin board...

WTF !!!
255/75/16 Scorpion AT's $104 ea + mounting and balance (~$15/16 ea)total @ $120 tire. BFG's are in Blue's price range. Yokos would be less than both.

I'm with Blue. Tires are an important part of your vehicle (D'Oh). I paid $607 for four BFG A/Ts.

There are cheaper tires available, but I don't want them.

Pirelli,BFG, and Yoko's are all "good" tires over the years I've had them all. IMHO the Pirelli gives me the best bang for the buck. The WTF was for the exclusively LR sunshine.

Todd:
I have run BFGs exclusively since 1988. I had a set of A/Ts last me for 110K miles and they still had acceptable tread when I replaced them. That's good enough for me. Yes, I know there are those who say they are hard and noisy and worthless off-road. I still like them and consider them to be great all-around tires for the woodland wheeling I do.

That said, I have been very impressed by the results of the Pirelli Scorpions a friend of mine has.

My next set will be BFG M/T.

I know, I was only kiddin back there. If you shop wisely, you can pick up a great set of tires for just a little over $100 each. I picked up Michelin LTX's for the wife's Ford for about $105 each on a Costco promo deal. But if you NEED tires ASAP, then you better have $150 * 4 or 5 in your pocket.

You may also want to check out the Futura Enforcer MT's that Pep Boys sell. Futura is made by Cooper, but they are rebranded for Pep Boys. They are good tires, and Pep Boys price them low to get you in the store. I got a set back in 2001, and they have since been throgh Hole in The Rock, Rubicon and Dusy Ershim - and the road trip to those trails and back from New Jersey. They are still holding up good. A set of 5 (235/85/16) installed ran me about $400.

I have the Futura Enforcer MT in same size as Ax. The y are a damn fine deal, and will last a long time if you keep 'em @ high PSI for highway travel.

I second or 3rd the Enforcer M/T. I actually had over 70K miles on them with about 40% off-road use. Never got stuck in mud or snow, etc. and they are resistant to cuts. It is noisy on the road but aren't all Mudders that way.

Maybe I'm unlucky but one of my cooper STT, on which the pep boys specialis based, has a slight scrape, and now has a bulging sidewall. That tireis now my spare...aone more damaged tire and they go probably in favor of wither the bfg mt or goodyear mtr

I have a 2000 D2, and i recently bought 4 BFG ATs and the dealership told me that I would need 5 because i could damage the drivtrain. The size isn't really that much of a difference. I got 255/70 16. My question is should I get a fifth tire and if I don't could there be damage if I get flat and put the Goddyear on? Oh and I know that the Goodyears suck big time but I am on a budget. Thanks a lot

Pete,
You should have the same size spare tire because of you don't, you can or will damage your drive train (diffs/x-fer case).

Chris, there was a recall on some Cooper tires. I don't remember the models, but a search of google for Cooper and recall should turn it up.
I have the STT's (7.50x16) and like them.
