I know this subject has been beat to death, and after reading a few previous posts and doing lots of research, I have decided to go Flowmaster over Borla. But I can't decide between a 40 series and a 50 series. I've heard sound clips of the 50 series and think it sounds wonderful. How does the louder 40 series sound? I could care less about interior resonance...my other toys are pretty loud, one with a choppy-cammed 502 and straight pipes coming out the sides right next to the doors directly into my and my passenger's ears. I like constantly being reminded that my engine is still running . I currently run 40 series on a couple of the cars, and the sound just makes my heart melt every time I get on the gas. However, I am having some doubt about how a 40 series would sound on a Disco since it has 300-600 less horsepower than my cars and an obviously smaller and differently designed engine and headers. I heard a straight-piped D1 and think it sounds like total crap. I don't want to buy a 40-series being as high flow as it is and have it sound like a straight-piped Disco. Although I know the 40's have got to be louder, louder doesn't always mean better. Nor does quieter for that matter...I want something that just sounds "good," for lack of a better word, since it's purely subject to opinion. Anyways, please post your thoughts about the sound quality, and send or link me some sound clips if at all possible (even clips of Dynomax, Edelbrock, etc. would be appreciated). Thanks a bunch! |

those were my sound clips that was with the standard 50 series. i got the newer 40 Series Delta and actully like it better than the 50. the Delta series remove the sometimes annoying resonance at i think 3k rpm. it's also a tad quieter (according to my meter) that the standard 50 series. which ever you choose. i think you'll be happy using the Delta series. here's the link to the standard 50 series sound clips: http://www.discoweb.org/flowmaster.htm

Do NOT buy the Flowmaster!! I was going to get the Flowmaster, but changed my mind. When I went to buy it a buddy of mine at the parts store informed me of a knock off brand called Flow-Tech. He said they are the same, since Flowmaster's patent was up they made a cheap replica. I didn't believe him, so I had him order one of each. They came in and I put them side by side. I looked in one then the other. I looked over one then the other. HMM they looked the same. I bought the Flow-Tech for no kidding, exactly half the price of the Flowmaster. After putting them on they sound the same as well. I got the 40 series and put it as far forward as possible to keep the sound a bit quieter (the closer to the end of the exhaust the louder it will be.) So far I am still very happy with the muffler. I also went with the 2.5 inch in and out (the Disco has a weird 2.375 pipe) and had the muffler shop run 2.5 from the muffler all the way out, removing the resonator. FWIW |

Haha, awesome Danno...I really appreciate those clips, as I'm sure lots others do! Man, the Flow Tech sounds like a helluva deal...I'm all about saving money and buying the generic brands. You'll find a case of Dr. Perfect soda stocking my fridge and a box of Apple Jills on top of it...maybe you'll find a Flow-Tech underneath my Disco! Thanks for the input fellas! |

I have a 40 series. It has a wonderful mellow tone and limited interior noise. |
