I'm wanting to mount a second battery so i'll quit burning up alternators. I've got hella 500's on my roof rack and 1000's on my brush bar, and i've already been through one alternator. I was just curious if anybody else has mounted a second battery, and if so, how you did it. Where did you put it, how did you enclose it, etc. Also, would putting one of those optima spiral cell batteries eliminate the need for a second battery, or are they just a waste of money? Any input appreciated, thanks.

You can fit 2 Optima's in the OEM location on a D2 not sure with the D1 but I believe it is the same. You can buy a solenoid terminal (about $50) to wire both batteries. Don't get the cheap isolators as they don't really work. Why don't you get a higher output alternator instead. Perhaps 135 amps and up. Check out the Wrangler Products. They have alternators and the solenoid terminals.

If you're burning up alternators, you need to get a higher output alternator and not add a battery. Adding a battery will only allow you to run your lights when the truck is not running. When the truck is running, the alternator acts as a generator to run electrical equipment in the vehicle (lights) while keeping the charge up on the battery. Hence, when the vehicle is running the power you're pulling is actually from the alternator and not the battery(ies).

One dead alternator does not equal burning up alternators.

Check out Warngler's website:

As mentioned in posts above, you may be overloading (to much current draw) your alternator. A second battery will not help and will just work your alternator more to charge-up a bigger battery.
