Is the new 4.6 liter discovery engine better the 4.0? Did Ford help design this one? If you know anything about the new engine please elaborate. What other improvements have been made to the new discovery?

Land Rover claims hundreds of improvements were made to the new Disco. The most noticable ones for me are:
* 4.6L engine from previous generation RR;
* new headlights that look like the current RR;
* revised taillamp configuration slightly;
* changed suspension valving;
* upgraded brakes;
* and new interior colors (black and alpaca).

Since the 4.6L engine came from the previous RR, I don't believe Ford helped to design it. I can say that I love my '03 Disco to death. It's been very reliable with the only warranty repair being a broken side mirror. No oil leaks too.

Chase,
IMO, if you think Ford design will help improve the disco, read no further and go get an explorer. I'm not saying BMW's influence was all that great either. The engine on my 99D2 has run like a top since day one (the AT, OTOH, is another story).

The 4.6 is the range rover engine leftover as the new rangie now has the BMW 4.4. IMO the 4.0/4.6 is easier to work on than the BMW V8 (I haven't worked the BMW V8, but I have worked on the V12, 750i and the inline-6, 533i and I've seen in some detail the 4.4V8).

It seems to me that you're looking for ammo to shoot down some negative comments you've heard about the "dependability" of the disco. That's fine, but if you really want one, get one, and be prepared to take care of it. More than likely, you'll have to spend more time and money than if you go another direction, but that is part of the experience of owning one of these things. They're not perfect, but when you dig in, you really begin to appreciate how the thing is put together and how it is (for the most part) designed to be repaired relatively easily when things do go wrong.

There's good D2 info here: http://www.disco2.com

The 2003 Disco uses the 4.6 Bosch Range Rover engine, which is as good as this engine gets. By that I mean it's the final evolution of the design they bought from Buick in the 1970s.

There are many improvements elsewhere in the 2003 Disco, and the Disco II in general is a vast improvement over the Disco I.

In my opinion this is the best LR product yet.

My brother the author ( www.augusten.com ) has a black 2003

My question re: 4.6.
Does this engine suffer from the same issues - valves (carbon build up) and leaking head gaskets as the 4.0. I understand its the same block, just bored and stroked to the higher displacement.

Thanks. I have an '01 and drove the '03 loaner for a few days. At my altitude (9,000 ft.) the 4.6 had slightly more power, but not enough to make me want one. I just use 3rd gear around town and over the mountain passes. Plus, I have the CDL stud on the t-case, and the '03 does not - so, I could add center diff lock at some point.
