Those of you who saw my Magnecore thread know that after I changed out the old wires and put in new plugs I noticed a difference in performance - more HP - but that I also noticed a difference in the basic way the engine was running. Especially at idle.

Yesterday on the way home from work it was vibrating enough to really annoy me, the RPM's were bouncy - rough. This morning I notice a "knock-knock-knock" with the RPM's while standing out side the vehicle when it is at idle. I have not had a chance to stick my head under the hood, but that noise and the rough idle are brand new to this vehicle.

Like I said, I've got an improvement in the HP and the way the engine drives, but this other stuff is bugging me.

If it were the injectors, why would it happen overnight? If it's the wires or the new plugs, why would they be worse than the OLD? And why would they make the car run better - but not as smooth...?

It is your plugs. The bosch one have a smaller tip so the wire does not grip them properly.

BUY GENUINE PLUGS

I could be wrong but I have seen this before with certain types of plugs so it is worth checking first

Genuine plugs?

I use the Autolites and have had no problems in the last 62,000 miles. They are only $1.94/2 at Wal-Mart.

Hard to go wrong with those prices.

Though I am guessing your joking Perrone :-) I use the cheap NGK spark plugs and they work fine. I have heard to stay away from the multi-prong plugs because they run hotter? Any truth to this?

This is probably a stupid comment, but double check your spark-plug wires are in the correct order.

Platinum plugs is general run hotter than the non-platinum plug they cross-reference with.

I put one in at a time, took one plug out, took the wire with it, then put that new plug and wire back in so that I would not get them out of order.

I like genuine plugs.

The incorrect champions ran like crap. The boschs I bought had the wrong ends on them and I could not find the right NGKs anywhere I went.

I am sure Nathan/RN/AB all carry the genuine plugs.

IMHO, go get a bunch of cheap Champions, either 322 if you're really cheap or 3322 if you want to spend a little more.... (not for the platinum, but for the double copper core)...

FWIW...

go back to that one plug that looked fouled and pull it out and see what it looks like..

I'll bet it looks fouled again..if so you may have issues with that cylinder such as a cracked ring, a bad valve seal, or even simpler like a bad terminal on that wire location.

a dead cylinder will cause a knock

PS:

RN11YCC is genuine, which isn't available in the US except through Rover parts houses; RN11YC4 is now known as 322, and the only difference between the two is that the Rover version has a copper core in the side-post that the 322 doesn't have (both have copper cores in the center post).

The 3322 is the platinum version of the 322; I don't care a hoot about the platinum, it has the double copper cores. And they're cheaper than any other platinum plug, like, $2 each, if that....

That's why I like 'em...
