I went into JiffyLube to get my oil changed last night. I would have done it myself but its been raining here a lot. The guy told me I need to have my radiator flushed, the transmission oil changed and that the Front differential oil looked horrible, but the rear was fine. I just bought my disco a while back and so I am not sure when this was all sone last. What do you think? I'd do it myself except the weather is so crappy here. He showed me the transmission oil and it was brown (which I know it should be pink) thoughts? My buddy told me that jiffylube ALWAYS tries to con people into doing more then what is really needed. What do yo think???

Oh one more thing... The guy wiped out a lot of orange gunk from my oil cap and told me that it looked like I had a lot of carbon build up in the engine and should probably have an engine flush done too.. infact he strongly recomeneded it. Also, he added, that while doing the engine flush, i should probably have the fuel filter changed. Anyt hought???

They could be telling you the truth. Have you ever checked the fluids before? Did you buy this rig used without checking the fluids, etc.? It is possible that they need attention. If you can DIY, you should do all the fluids/filters soon. As for the carbon build-up, that is another story and you can do a search (a lot of topics). Have fun!

he could very well be right on all accounts, but please, in the name of all that is good, do it yourself or take it somewhere else.

the logical response to your message topic is:

Blue is right,

The guy was probably giving you good info, but you should do this stuff yourself. First order of business is to get a manual. Second order of business is to do EVERYTHING described in a 60k service. That is what you should have done when you first got the truck.

Basically change ALL fluids, filters, give it a tune-up, grease the grease points, check all your bulbs, replace brakes if they need it. You'd be surprised at how much you'll learn about your truck doing the 60k. And how much money you'll save instead of going to the dealer.

some Jiffy lubes are ok others are just shit!

but all the things that he mentioned are pretty common Disco things.

jiffy lube has some pretty sweet flush toys, I have paid them to flush and descale a number of radiators and I have seen really scalled up ones come super clean.

Yeah I really do a lot of that stuff myself. I put on new rotors and braks when i got it. I've changed the oil multiple time.. etc.... Im just a lazy college guy this term, it's pouring down rain non stop and I dont have a covered area to do anything under.

Jiffy this Jiffy that, all I know is that I have had two bad experiences with them before I learned to do it all myself - easy.

I used to own a Nissan Pathfinder. I took it to them to get the oil changed. And I don't want to say for sure that they did this... but... well first, they put the wrong filter on, so while it screwed on "correctly", the seal didn't sit right and I had to take it back to them that same day.

Then, about 3-4 days later I started getting smoke coming from the truck! Flying down the freeway looking like I'm on fire! I stopped to check of course, but there was no sign of any fire or smoke unless I was driving. I took it to my very trusted mechanic (should have done this first) Asked him to check it out. He said that there was an oil leak (On a Nissan, that's rare)and that it was just the oil that was burning on the exhaust etc. But that there was soooo much oil that he could not tell where it was coming from. "Take it home, clean it, then drive it for a day and try to determine where the leak is."

When I got the truck back to the mechanic he drove it himself and said that he could swear there was oil coming out of every gasket at higher RPM's! He took the oil cycling system apart and found some sort of fiberous material literaly clogging the hoses. So the engine was running on oil that was not being cycled through the filter because the whole system had been blocked by a tissue or rag that evidentally had been stuffed into the oil filter opening when they changed out the bad filter for the new (remember they put the wrong one on first?)

My mechanic was so surprised and dumbfounded that he only charged me $50 for a two day trouble shoot and operation.

Don't go to Jiffy - buncha punk kids

Jiffy Lube does seem to be a bunch of punk kids trying to make a quotta for their store. I ended up taking my disco to them today to have them change the trans fluid. I went home and flushed the radiator myself (saving me $60). It didnt take long.

Are you going to trust your vehicle to a bunch of grease monkeys who couldn't hack it flipping burgers at McDonalds??

Every time I've taken mine into one of these places, they've managed to screw it up one way or another -- whether it be overtightening the drain plugs or adding fluids that I specifically told them not to, putting the wrong fluids in the power steering, etc.

If these people could listen or use their brains (such as they are) they wouldn't be working at Jiffy Lube in the first place.

Inclement weather or not -- better do it yourself rather than put yourself at the mercy of these idiots.

well I dont get my oil changed anywhere...thats what the driveway is for.

what my above comment was about was they have some cool flush equipment. I have had them flush radiators in a number of vehicles, because they have a system that costs about 5k and does a great job. you just need to be smart about it and check every thing before you drive away and when you get home check it all again. lack of flushes on a aluminum block motor will cause problems as well.

Simple solution if you can't do it yourself like I can't do to nasty weather...just watch them! All the guys I know at Jiffy Lube type places are so interested in what my truck has that they just talk to me while they change fluids. I just sit there on the ground and watch...sometimes walk under the truck with them.

There may be a few good Jiffy Lube shops around but the one's I have used (Northern Delaware)in the past are just plain incompetant. My take is that most of the employees at these shops are ill trained and poorly supervised. They are not trained mechanics.

As for the other services they offer, I would not have them touch my vehicle if the services were free!!!!

One VERY important fact that nobody mentioned yet is the fact that these Jiffy Lube "techs" are on partial commission. It is their job to upsell you everything they can. It doesn't matter if you need it, it only matters if they can convince you. Most people fall for the $15 air filters.

Well I blame it on Drug use in the workplace. When there's a bunch of teenagers working at a shop w\ very little supervision they probably get high at lunch or on breaks. I was a teen once and I was the range boy at a golf course driving range and me and my co workers would go to the back of the range and get high and/or drunk.
