This weekend i plan to change out most of the suspension bushing in my disco. I decided that since im going to be doing so many bushings, and will do this again sometime, that i want to buy my own hydraulic press.
I wantt o know if i should get a 6 or 12 ton (or even bigger)
the two I am looking at are :
the 6 ton: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=697 0&langId=-1&catalogId=4006970&PHOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=47690&categoryId=0

and the 12 ton:
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=697 0&langId=-1&catalogId=4006970&PHOTOS=on&TEST=Y&productId=21029&categoryId=0

let me know what yall think, any info is much appreciated

I've been around this horn a bunch of times. I've seen 20 ton presses fail on pressing out some of the bushing on our trucks. I had intended to have mine by now but with what I learned, I reasoned it was just as easy to take the parts to the local machine shop which has a 100 ton press. They can do the work while I stand there, and change me only a few bucks.

A quality press is going to be closer to $500-750. I wouldn't trust anything that cost less than $250. The danger involved in having something "let go" with 10-12 tons of force being pressed on it causes me enough concern to not cheap out.

I know there will be a bunch of people here who will give stories of how their $80 10 ton press has never failed them and that's terrific. I just choose to do something else.

Good luck in your quest.

update!

I got the 12 ton press from northern tool this morning. I pressed out the panhard rod bushings no problem, and performed effortlessly.
it was definitely worth the $120, and definitely reccomend picking one up if you need a press.

I have a 12 ton purchaced from Harbor Freight close to 20 years ago. I've pressed out and in everything there is to do on Land Rovers (except Series steering relays and frame mounted spring bushings). Never had a problem, though some very loud bangs when things released.

Will,

Glad to hear a good report on the press. I've been eyeing that 12 ton unit for a while now. Tell me something though. You pay for overnight shipping or something or is there a Northern Tool up there in Atlanta?

Will,

I'm in Snellville on 78 past Stone Mountain. I've checked out the presses at the Memorial Drive store but have yet to make the dive.

I've got the same projects that you've done. Front end bushings, u-joints, etc.

A press would more than handle the job.
