i have a decent knowledge of rovers but i wanted to ask the pros. i am looking for a tough daily driver 4 door v8 rover that can take a beatin on the weekends. first of all, i know each model has its pros and cons, but what is the general consensus on the D1 vs. D2, county LWB vs. SWB, and 4.0 vs. 4.6? I know these are all very capable vehicles but any specific models i should look for or stay away from? Are the newer ones (95+) any better? How about BMW years any better and what are they? I have always admired the county LWB but that air suspension looks like it is asking to break. Will a stock Disco outwheel a stock LWB? Lastly, which model has the most potential offroad? Thanks in advance, looking to spend no more than 25-30k or so. I plan on wheelin the shit out of this thing but then wash it and drive it to work. Needs to be reliable and strong. Help!!!

p.s. i almost shit in my pants reading all the H2 posts, you guys are almost as cool as the cruiserheads

Not the expert here but here is my recommendation:

First find a decent used '98 - 99 D1, you can find them from $9-18K depending on the miles and you may even find one with less than 50K miles which may still be under warranty.
Spend about $3-5K for all the suspension / bumpers / rock sliders / tires. And you're ready to go. And this will set you about $22K so you still have $8K for a 4.6L engine if you want one or spend on other upgrades.
BTW, I saw alot of very good quality D1's here in SoCal mostly mall cruisers for soccer moms that never seen any dirt trail. Good luck!

Phil,
Thanks for the reply-I agree on the mods but.....why a 98-99 D1? What is special about this year and model. Why not a 2000 D2? are the D1s better offroad or just within my budget after mods.(sorry to be so difficult but i have to ask)

also how would you rate the old RR LWB and the 4.0/4.6 off road capabilites? I could buy a 95 LWB or similar model for the price of a d1. Or are these models mainly pavement pounders? I have seen a few trail-worthy LWBs here is houston but which one would you rather own?

The D2's have a worse depature angle, due to the large ass! There are more aftermarket toys for the D1. The D1 also has the ability to lock the center diff. If you really want to wheel. SWB is prefered. Be careful about 95 LWB Range Rovers. They have air springs which are known to have problems and are expensive to repair. Most owners end up converting to conventional springs.

I agree with John. Land Rover added (not quite sure on the figures) 4 inches in width and 6 inches in length. A nice 97 to 99 (no distributor)can be found on www.lrx.com or www.ebay.com. Be careful about buying from the Yuppies! I was in Land Rover last summer with a woman that was complaining that her Disovery (D1) wouldn't go over 45 MPH. Come to find out she had been driving for 4 weeks with the diff lock engaged in four low; she had been skiing the month prior. I couldn't pick my jaw off the floor when the service guy was explaining to her the damage she did. Her answer? well we didn't drive it much. Buyer beware.

A buddy of mine picked up a '95 LWB about 6 months ago for $9000. Since then he has put another $5000+ into it (no mods!). Really check out any vehicle you buy. His air suspension tanked first thing and he still has a gremlin running around in his rig. He bought a LR that was abused by the previous owner, be careful. He also is a little more limited on the trails here in the NW due to the LWB.

Incidentally, I'm selling my '99 D1 right now . As Peter will say, NEVER BEEN OFFROAD! Seriously, it hasn't and it makes me want to .
