here in the mid-sorta-west, (I70 corridor) we have 6" on the grounds winds shifting from the nor-east at 15-25 mph with drifts as high as 4', least thats what it looks like out the backdoor. my yard tractor is now a large pile of snow and there is 2' out the drive and 3' of snow off the porch. we are expecting another 6' and i have to go to the base and move snow this afternoon. finally a real winter....

Al,

The accord had spun off the road into a wet muddy ditch .. almost covering the left front wheel in mud. I asked the guy if he wanted me to try to pull him out using the factory tie downs on the Accord, after telling him his air damn might be worse for wear, and he agreed. I looped my new 3" 30k lb 30 foot strap thru my pintle hook and shackled the 2 strap ends thru his tie down.

Worked like a charm, with no damage to the accord.

Not exactly a taxing extraction for the Disco, but it was fun being prepared and helping the guy out.

On a side note, all we've gotten here is ice. :-( Not the huge snow they predicted. Its still fun though.

Just got back from a trip this weekend up in the Pocono's. Pic's at:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gparrish/

The site has event pics from the ROVERS club event I attended under SCCFEB2003 and pics of my drive back home under SCCDRIVEHOME. It's funny, there is as much snow on the roads near my house as there were up in the mountains.

My picket fence that Karen enjoyed so much is almost burried. We have about 8 to 10 inches of fresh snow and it's still going. I'm pretty close to the Delaware line in SE PA.

I am in Winston Salem, NC and there is nothing but some hardcore ice. The roads are all white, and most of the yards are too.

I need help in N.Va. I got stuck in 2 feet of snow. I think it was my technique. My commute went well, then I got stuck in my own driveway! I mean stuck! Wheels would spin, truck would NOT move.

Any help would be appreciated. I have a 96 D1 with new Pirelli Scorpians. I had to dig it out and rock it. I'm so ashamed.

I'm very scared. How can a Rover owner be scared of snow? I have to go back to work at 6:oo am (essential personel) and do not have faith in my D1. Please tell me it was my technique. Any tips would be appreciated.
Please help. Thanks. Brad

Hey Greg thanks for the pics. Between that and the news reports I'm oh so thankful I left that neck of the woods. FYI had a cold front move through last night its only going to get up into the fifties today, might have to break out the long pants.

Yep, Tom, I'm a current resident of Chester County. :-) Malvern to be exact. You probably recognize some of those shots. I was coming down from the Pocono's with zero snow most of the way, but drove into it around Lansdale, so I hoped off the Blue Route (476) onto 63 at Lansdale as I heard traffic was stopped and had been sitting for over 1.5 hours. I then scooted over to 113 and then to 29. Rode 29 all the way around Valley Forge Park and right into home on the Mainline in Malvern.

The roads were bad yesterday, but nothing like this morning. I woke up to find that my Fence is now all but an inch or two from being burried, and our stone flower box that stands 3 to 3.5 feet tall is gone........... under snow. My truck, which I backed in at the top of the drive and shoveled around last night around 9pm, is in route to being burried again, but the more amazing part is that the snow is almost level with my hood.

Left my house in Charlottesville at 9PM last nite, drove north into Madison county, hit trail head with 16" of this frozen, grainy snow we had here yesterday around 11 PM. No tracks. Two FJ80s I was with had to stop, no traction, wider tires were floating. Tried front chains only and that lasted a while, then I had to put on all four when it got steep. Chains dug through, wheeled for several miles in the stuff, came out, back home before 2AM. Sweet trip. Love the snow.

I wish I could be so enthusiastic. We need some barn Viagra. Our barn and indoor arena are trying to collapse under the snow and ice load. David spent all morning shoring up, and we can only hope it doesn't drop any lower or beams will start snapping. Nerve-wracking to say the least. David is plowing work areas so we can try and get some of the load off the roof, but that prospect is precarious at best. I'm just trying to keep the horses fed and watered, and otherwise I'm feeling a little sick. Sorry to spread this joy, I just thought I'd take a DiscoWeb mental health break while I warmed up.

KJ,
How big is the barn? Not too big, maybe something with a bucket could rake some off? Around here, most roofing companies remove snow in the winter. There is no real science, other than they tie off to a cleat so they don't fall off. Then, they shovel it off any way they can. New buildings here have to support 150 lbs per sq. foot snow load - we can get over 40 feet per year. However, the East Coast snow is much heavier (more moisture) than Colorado snow.

If you really think it's sketchy (kinda sounds it) see if the barn doors and windows will open. That's a good indication that the building is really stressed from the load. If they won't open, or close due the the door frame/window frame hitting, I'd stay away and pray for the best.

Good luck,
Jack

I wish I had my disco here in Bethesda, MD. I am here visiting and got this little stinking rental car. What I wouldn't give for my dico right now. I have missed 6 flights and not even sure if I can make it to the airport in the morning because they haven't plowed the road.

Jack, thanks for the suggestion, but it's BIG. I can never seem to figure out how to post pictures straight onto the board, but here's a picture I just took of David shoveling. It shows a corner of our barn. It's over 1/3 acre under roof.

http://www.crosslink.net/~kejones/snow2003b.jpg

I don't know of any companies around here that get snow off roofs. Since our big storms are so intermitant, I guess if those businesses exist, we don't hear about them. I heard an autobody shop near us collapsed today. It's a real problem when you have a lot of roof.

Here's another pic I just took. It still doesn't show the entire barn, but it DOES show the most important thing....the Disco! ;) The blur on the right is the shovelful of snow David is hefting over the side. Of course, HE'S the real important thing..... :-)

Big roof with not much pitch. Not good. Some folks here with flat roofs build a ramp and put a snow blower up there for the season.
My niece is into horses, she's in Palm Springs, CA now for some show for a coulple of months. I grew up in VA around horses, but liked cars better! Our Disco has a semi-permanent two-tone stripe from all of the gravel and sand they use on the roads here - yours looks fairly clean!

Yeah, believe me, had David built our barn, it would have had different specs! The Disco is fairly clean because it sat in the indoor arena through the storm.

I'm with Carter, Karen nice barn! Love to see some pics of it in the spring. I'm sure right abou tnow you would like to also. How many stalls is it? How many head is your operation? How many chickens can you get a hold of? They put off a lot of heat and are safer than a flamethrower.

Best of luck

Hi KJ-
I second the "Nice Barn" comment. Remember shoring it up will apply the force to another possibly weaker spot. Another option is to take a couple of 2x12's and nail them them on top of each other. A "V" shape will also work. Basically build a blade to drag across the roof with a tractor bucket or the Disco. It will drag the snow off very quickly and save David's back. Just don't let it gather too much at a time and increase the load. Good luck and thanks for the pics of this barn you kept mentioning, very nice and hopefully making you some money!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. Tense times here right now, but nothing sank more overnight (David made chalk marks to track the troubles). Snowman, logistically I don't think your idea for a big snow rake would work, but I appreciate you thinking about it and I'll mention it to David. He is sliding slabs of snow down the roof, though it still involves a lot of muscle work and a lot of walking back and forth. He's doing the most stressed areas first. The horses are flip-city with all the roof noise and from being in for three days. I'm finally able to turn them out in the indoor arena, so a couple at a time are getting some recess. I've heard of several building collapses in the area. This is why we dread snow. You bet we can't wait until Spring!

When it's 98 degrees in July, with 98% humidity, just look back at that picture with all the snow!

Hope everything is ok, from talking to my family in VA, looks like the weather has moved into New England.

Well, this has been a test of endurance, that's for sure. We are STILL shoveling snow, and have at least a day or two of shoveling to go. I've been shoveling snow from below, hurling it out of the outside aisleway, David has continued to unload the roof. We're now entering the too much mud and water phase of the contest. I chopped a few loooong troughs in the ice and snow to funnel the run-off toward the driveway, but the sheer volume of water is staggering. I'm grateful that David saved the barn, it was a Herculean effort, but I hate winter and I HATE snow! Maybe if I could run the roads in the Disco I'd feel differently, but in our lives snow does NOT give us wood.... unless we're using the wood to prop up the trusses!
