I have a ’97 Discovery. It has 245/70 BGF All-Terrain TA/KO’s, Roof Rack, and running boards. Other then that it is a completely stock Discovery. I am thinking of taking the (I think stock) running boards off so that I don’t break them 4 wheel driving. Any ides? Thanks.

Or just go with them and the trail will yank them off for you!

Garret C,

I went wheelin' with my running boards on once, once.... They didn't last long. Now, this would have been the end of it. But it turned out that I had to put them back on (womenfolk involved in the decision). Since they where destroyed, I had to fix them up which was a pain.

I would suggest taking them off. There is only 4 bolts per board and this will greatly increase your breakover angle. Not to mention every little bump you won't hear them scaping the ground...

Does anyone have any idea on a way to manufacture some sort of quick-disconnect for the boards? I've been running without them for months but have to put them on now- at least on the passenger side. Short, elderly great aunts don't like take running jumps into the seat when I'm transporting them to the doctor once a week. The four bolts aren't too bad, but if you just take off the boards, then the brackets remain which seem like they'd get scraped or bent off first time across a boulder.

Any ideas?

Also- at some point I want to add sliders, hidden or otherwise. Thought I remembered a post from awhile back about running board quick-disconnects where hidden sliders were mentioned, but don't see anything in the archives. There's got to be some way of quickly getting these off...the passenger side one's been on all of one day and it's snow collection capabilities are amazing!

The old ladys could use the exercise. Sell em on Ebay and put it towards mods

I don't think I'll get a whole lot for elderly aunts on Ebay...but you never know. Maybe enough for sliders?

Garret-
Yes remove them! Then you can sell them to someone who does not go off-road. Then use the money for diff guards.

A couple of years ago I went out with my stock Disco I (no running boards) and a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee (with running boards). At the end of a great weekend of 4 wheeling, the Cherokee running boards were completely shredded - at every drop-off we heard crunching fiberglass! Not a scratch on the Disco of course.

So I would take them off.
