I've been doing a bit of mild offroading lately in my 96 Discovery - never had a problem. YEsterday I was out with my buddies doing some mudding on a "medium" trail when I began to experience problems with my differential lock. The light began to blink and basically - when I needed to exert some RPM's - the Diff lock began to dis-engage. The sound of gears "clicking/grinding" underneath was NOT a pretty sound. The diff lock basically kept disengaging itself - even with the lever fully forward. I spent the rest of the afternoon moving that lever in and out of diff lock getting it to engage for the short time it would stay engaged. Managed to finish the trip okay - but i can't figure out whats going on. I definitely made sure i was pushing the lever as far foward as it would go but still I'd have to take it out of Diff lock and put it back in repeatedly in order for me to keep it engaged. Obviously there is some other factor that causes the diff lock to engage or disengage other than just gear selections. Car drives perfectly otherwise. Can anyone lend me any insight as to what might be going on. Could this be a vacuum loss? - I noticed my cruise control was not working on the way home from my "excursion". Has anyone else ever seen this behaviour and or have any ideas what might be going on? Sure do appreciate any and all input. Thanks!

Most probably your linkage is bound and the lever on the transfer case is not being moved fully into the locked position. Once it's locked driving loads should not move it. Check the travel of your hi/lo shifter. John www.robisonservice.com |

The diff lock basically kept disengaging itself - even with the lever fully forward When I went to MAR this past year I went half the day open because I hadn't shifted the lever all the way forward AND then to the left. I'm not sure if this is what you did, but if I'm not mistaken the diff lock must be pushed forward and towards you. Hope me sharing my stupidity helped either you, or someone else. Man I felt like such an idiot when I figured it out!!! LOL Ego, what Ego??? LOL OUCH! |

Don't know about the Diff lock but it does sound like you have a bad CC vac. I don't think they are related, but if you were in some mud it might have dirtied up your CC vac hoses. Those things are in the worst spot! I haven't actually found the time to fix mine yet (CC hasn't worked for several months) but I don't do much long distance driving (10 minutes out of town and I'm in the outback). I've narrowed it down to the vac problem though. |

i have had problems with my Cruise Control, only to find that the vacum hose for the CC was cracked. All I did was cut the cracked ends off and plug hose back on fitting. But the hose did crack again and again rendering my CC useless. So i went to the auto parts and got a new hose, installed it, and imagine this, it works perfectly. So check your vacume hoses on your cruise control. Oh yeah. The cruise control is located on the left fender well on the inside of your engine compartment. |

Just an observation...the diff lock engagement is from right to left, not up and down. |
