We were wondering if there would be any problems running Mid-Grade (89 Octane) in our Disco II. We have searched for a service station with 91 Octane mid-grade, however we only have 87, 89, or 93 Octane in our area. Thank You. |

The manual says you have to use higher than 91 octane - so you must use 93 octane that you have available, if not you will hear engine knocking. |

I've switched back and forth on my 2000 DII - sometimes I use 93 other times I use 89. I can't find 91 in my area either. I honestly don't notice a different (no engine knocking/mileage is the same). There was a thread about gas octane a couple weeks back (check the archives) and someone was mentioning that because there are random checks on gas stations to make sure that they are selling the octane as advertised (when you pay for 93 you get 93) - that most gas stations actually stay on the safe side, and that the octane gas they have are actually a little higher than what they advertise. That way they will never get in trouble. I don't know if this is true or not, but it is easy to convince yourself that 89 might really be like 90 which is pretty close to 91!!! ha!!! Good luck Will |

Isn't the difference in octane rating just a matter of different rating? I.e. 89 CLC is the same as 91 RON? I'm not sure just asking. However, I think mid-grade is mid-grade and if mid-grade is what you want to run, just put it in. |

I run mid-grade in my truck and have no problems. If the price is low, I run premium but I don't see a huge difference in performance between the two. |

If you put mid grade in the motor it will be more prone to knock. But you won't hear it because the knock sensor will see it and back off the timing until it doesn't. The modern engine's self adaptive ability is very good. People are left a false impression that they can burn any junk grade of fuel and it's all the same. That's wrong. The result is that your motor will run with retarded timing, generating more heat, running slightly less efficiently. You may or may not notice this, but I assure you it happens. In addition, I have been told by factory people that the change in combustion temperatures resulting from this adaptation will increase the tendency to build carbon on the exhaust valve stems, which can cause early valve train failure. I wish I'd have been running the cheapest s@#t gas I could find in my D2. No not me, for three years and 40k I have to put the good stuff in. Now as a reward for my dilegence my D2 will probably run just fine (at least from the carboned up valve/stem issue nee big $$$) until somewhere around 5 to 10k OUT OF WARRANTY. Had I run donkey piss in the tank, this poorly designed/engineered and yes defective material and workmanship valves/stems would carbon up, s@#t the bed and be repaired under warranty. Not that I am bitter...yet. |

Todd.. tell us how you feel. Really. <g> I've been running mid gas and there isn't a noticiable(sp) feel. I've been mixing and matching on a 1997 D1 that now has 132K on the clock. Took it to the mechanic for a check up and said engine runs good. Except for the oil leaks.. LOL.. I use and abuse the poor truck makes me shame. Pobrecito!! (shaking head) |
