This morning I got into my 97 D1 and started it to warm up while I cleared the 6" of snow off of it. When I got in, it would not release out of park....try several things like turning off, waiting and starting again, being forceful with the shifter, rocking the truck, etc and nothing would work. I shut it off and walked my dog for an hour or so. When I got home, i gave it another try and seems to be fine now. My question is has anyone else had a similar problem. i'm concerned about getting stranded with this situation. Is there any electrical components that I shoul;d check or do you think it's just the prince of darkness letting me know he's still traveling with me every day. Any thoughts would be great.

Check your brake lights - you've got a bad switch or a blown fuse. If the switch is bad jump it to shift out of park.

John,

What switch are you referring to? Would it be the one that is engaged by the brake pedal. Thanks for your input. Just checked and the brake lights work so maybe the switch is just beginning to go bad. Is this a typical problem on the D1 like some of the others.

Thanks again, John

check the brake and signal fuse. if it is blown the shifter will not engage. there is a little switch that may need to be depressed by a screwdriver if the fuse is good. you have to take the whole console apart to get to it. it happened to me. get this on the vegas freeway i pulled over to tighten down my trailer load. the signal light on the trailer bulb blew the fuse. i then jumped in not knowing the fuse went, and it would not shift. i then after not sleeping for about 28 hours thought what am i going to do? i then tore it all aprt, depressed that little switch got it into gear signalled to pull out and whoila no signals. i then went "shit " as the bulb above my head went on. i changed the fuse and all of it worked. i drove away with all the console in pieces and i damaged some of it in the process. life can suck when you haven't slept and it is hot outside...

check fuse number 25. I think someone had told me that fuse will keep your truck in park.

Hope it helps

If your brake and signal lights work, it may be the pin in the shifter. Check all fuses first. Second the brake switch. Third shifter.

Thanks for all your help. Checked everything and all seems to be fine. Have not experienced it again but i'm sure I will. I'm suspecting it may be the switch so I'm going to have a look there.

Thanks again for the knowledge.

If it isn't a burned-out bulb or fuse, it's a dislodged e-clip inside the shifter handle. This e-clip will keep the button from dis-engaging the shifter lock mechanism.

Pry off the medalion on the top and the e-clip should be readily apparent. I fixed one for a friend with nothing more than a Swiss army knife, but small, needle-nosed Vise Grips make the jobe easier.

Cheers

John, don't just forget about it!! What you're talking about sounds like a brake switch going bad. If you wait to replace it when it breaks you may be in the middle of Death Valley, who knows?

The switch is located on the front side of the brake "arm" that extends from the pedal up. If you pull off the kick panel you can plainly see the switch with a wire clip and a 1/4" rubber tube attached to it. The tube goes to the ABS housing under the hood and the wires are connected to your shifting mechanism. Just turn the brake switch CW and pop it out. They're only about $25 through GAPA.com to replace. I actually bought 2 when I replaced mine and put it in my emer. kit.

Yes, I'm a little paraniod.
Preventative maintenance if you ask me...

Thanks...I do plan on checking it out once the snow gives me a break. I too, like to be proactive so I don't get left somewhere or far worse, my wife. Everytime the Disco breaks down, I have to listen to her bitch about it. One thing nice is that she is always hesitant to take it!

awesome thread...have printed it out and stuck it in the glove box. Guess I better email Nathan and get the switch if he has it. Any other good sources.

Thanks again
