Today I went 4-wheel driving for the first time with my recently purchased Discovery, defiantly not the first time 4-wheel driving. Good times! I came to the decision that I should keep this vehicle for its entire life. I have been considering getting an Audi S4 with the RS4 upgrade. Somehow the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a Discovery living in Colorado. But at the same time I feel the need for raw brutal performance.

Do other people have the same feelings and needs as I do? If so what do you drive or ride (motorcycle). I also want to consider a Ducati 749R.

Garret,

I'm moving to Wyoming. I am keeping my Rovers. The next two vehicles I purchase will be a Unimog or Pinzgauer (for really bad weather) and I will build up a 66 Mustang fastback. I'm thinking of modern underpinnings, roll cage, 351C or 427. Competition spec with about 450-550HP.

I miss my BMW (gave it to the kid) and right now, I don't want the 911. So working up a classic 'stang is in the cards. I was going to build one up for the kid and keep my BMW, but I just got too busy.

On the other hand, you might want one of those Japanese burners like a WRX. I don't personally like Japanese cars, but with that new 300HP version coming, a good 5 speed, and AWD, it may be just the ticket for a lot of people.

Garret,
Since the advent of internet user's groups, I've found that every car I've owned has suffered from the majority of problems reported by the owners on those sites. So, you may want to view the archives and research your Disco for potential issues.
My Disco has suffered from a few minor, typical new car issues. The only one that worried me was the upper wiring harness had to be replaced (under warranty) due to mud entering some connections, and causing chafing, and a short sending the ECU into fault mode, which the dealer couldn't diagnose due to the short. That would have cost me over $1000 to repair. But all is well now. I'm looking at new rotors and brakes, which I'll do myself, since the dealer wants around $700. So, right now, I plan on keeping mine for many years.
My Explorer is 10 years old, 146K miles, and I've suffered the usual "exploder" repairs, but all in all, it's been a great vehicle.
A Yamaha YZ250 dirt bike may be my next toy. My neighbor has a "fleet" of dirt bikes so for now, I ride his YZ250, or 426. I'd like to buy one, or the WR version to ride to work, and rip up the trails in the summer.

Garrett,
I usually find myself in the same position. I'll keep the rover for it's useful life and then get a car to toy with. But I too have an Aprilia RSV-R and FZR400 that I love to tinker with and use to blast the backroads of VA. The problem i always face though is should I get a car or add to my collection of motorcycles? Then one day I sat down and actually put thought to it and came up with this plan. I'll stick with the rover and make it the expedition/off-road vehicle that I want. When that is done I'll buy a car to offers both day to day driving comfort with a little style and performance and I can then keep buying motorcycles that will allow me to get my speed fix. This way, I'll have off-road fun, day to day transportation with a little fun and a motorcycle that will satisfy my fun factor.
If you can swing it so that your rover can satisfy both day to day needs and off-roading, then stick with getting a motorcycle. That is what I am doing now. In this day and age, there is nothing that can match a sportbike for performance at such a small intial outlay. Look at it this way, if you were lucky enough to get one of the new 999r's your outlay would be somewhere around 30k. Where are you going to get a car to match it's performance for that price tag?

Hey Perrone-
Wyoming is a beautiful state, my wife and I toured through it years ago. Plus it's reasonably close to British Columbia which has some amazing countryside. Sounds like a fun move. Did you get your Stetson yet? Stetson Hats

I've got a trip planned to get my Stetson, Tony Lama's, and all my other gear. Looks like we'll be settling in Laramie. I've been there once, but I need to go visit again this fall or so.

FWIW, The forthcoming 300hp/300ft-lb Subaru WRX-STi has a 6-speed, and a center-locking diff, and front and rear lockers, too.... :-)

Oh, and look at Lucchese, too... I like 'em a lot more than Tony Lama's.....

FWIW...

When I feel the need for speed...this is what I strap myself into

However, If I were in the two wheeled market, the Ducati would definitely be high on the list.

Perrone, Garret c,

Let me know if you guys want to hit a trail some time.

I live in Northern Colorado about 1.5 hours from where you are moving Perrone, but you are only about 45 min from where we take the dirt bikes/ go four Wheeling. There is some good four wheeling in this area and you can be in Moab in around 8 hours or so :-)

I'm from Laramie.
It's F&#%ing cold and windy. Donner party, loose-fingers-then-die-while-your-buddies-resort-to-cannibalism-kickin-it-old-school-style, cold. The wind is the really bad part. The good part is that it can be absolutely gorgeous and it is close to so many wonderful places, many of which are public, either BLM, National Forrest, or national grassland. I'm personally happy the weather keeps most out. I'd hate Wyoming to be more like Colorado. It's a place you really have to Want to live to be happy at all.
