Hi All,

No, not in this freezing cold weather but during last summer while outside temps ranged in the low 90's, my Disco I (97) was loaded with camping gear (especially on the roof rack) and I noticed after a few hours of driving (driver and 2 other occupants) the inside floor behind the cubby box and the general area to the right and left of it was burning hot. This was especially true after some long slow climbs up long grades. Driving during this time was on pavement, which I'm sure radiated tremedous heat too. This floor area has gotten warm on occasion but never this hot. Any suggestions why and possible damage???

Likely you missing a heat shield, will likely burn your carpet.

Hi Brian,

I appreciate your response. Once the weather clears here I can go under the Disco and look for the sheild. Can you give me some idea what it looks like? I asssume it's some metal sheild that goes between the rear diff and body...is that correct? Any help would be appreciated. By the way, it wouldn't be that lubricant is low in the diff causing such heat?

Doubtful, where the heat is coming from is the first thing. If the shield is not there, that is very likely the problem. I had the same thing happen.

Dave:
Heat shield is between the big center muffler and the floor, not the diff and the floor. Aluminum-foil-coated fibreboard or composite, mounted on standoff brackets about one inch above the muffler. Famous for falling apart - I need to order my third and put it on. Good luck.

Hi Brian and John,

Thanks for both your feedbacks. Once the snow outside melts a bit and I can get under the Disco, I'll have a look and see if the heat shield is there. From what you both describe, it's probably not. Just glad (or hoping) I haven't caused any damage since it was very hot for quite a number of days (as I described above).

** I assume if the heat shield is gone or has fallen apart, that the standoff bracket is still left intact? John, could you tell me where you order yours (heat shield) from and if you have a part number? Guess I'll be ordering one too! Thanks again and I'll look for your response.

David

David: Brackets are part of the muffler, so still should be there. Reach up above the muffler (when it's cold) and see if the bolts are still in the brackets - two front and two rear. Heat shield is NTC7196, $48 plus shipping from RoverConnection.com.

yea mine just got soft and kind of tore itself apart....i actually was hearing a noise....like a tap...tap...tap from under the car, well only one of the screws was holding the shield on, so it was hitting hte driveshaft....anyway, i would bet a lot of money that this is what it is, if you get water up there, or snow, i mean it could cause it to get soft eventually....later

Thanks John and Jess (and everyone else).....you really answered all my questions and concerns. My Disco is currently buried with snow so it will be a bit of time before I'm able to climb underneith and have a look, but as soon as I can, I will and check things out. I'll let you know what I find. You guys have been a big help!

David
