Is it any good. I need some OBDII reading at this very moment (and I live in CA so Autozone won't do it for free)

$40 is cheap! I paid $125 for mine, but it does more than the cheap ones. Popcorn anyone?

I got one I had about 5 stored codes in the ECU and a check engine light, I think the code was "P1234 not holding your tongue correctly while shifting into drive" Anyway it reads the codes for you 5 times after the fifth time it will clear all resolved codes... If you have a bad O2 sensor that code would come back of course as it can't fix the problem... This outfit comes out with Sale flyers all the time.. I got mine for $10 off from a sale flyer...Plus for orders over $25 shipping is free (with a nominal handling charge like $2

I bought the harbor freight jobby. i figured for 40 bucks it was cheaper then paying some tech and all it had to do was work once. guess what.
it did!
seems fine to me. not complicated, but it does the job and was very cheap!
