I have a 95 Disco and my wife has a 2000 Cherokee Sport. Anyone have any suggestions for a bike rack that will fit both vehicles. Can I put one of those inexpensive ones on the rear door above the spare tire and to the right of the roof ladder? I would like to avoid using a hitch carrier if possible.

trailer hitch or there's a yakima-thule bike system that fits on the factory racks is probably your only 2 options |

If the spare is mounted on the back of the jeep you could use one of the racks that is actually mounts on the spare tire. I believe they are reasonably priced. |

Thule's square bar clamp is a straight fit on the D1 factory racks and Thule has Rail Riders or something that fits the Cherokee sliders. I think I might have a set in the garage. Reply if you're interested. |

I have a "Hollywood Rack" that fits on my spare tire. It's OK, and only cost $70. It's really easy to put on and take off, but for a permanent solution I'll probably get a Yakima or Thule spare tire mount rack. Although you won't be able to switch those as easily between vehicles as I believe they use some sort of mounting plate. And I've heard that the mounting plate doesn't fit the disco so I'd have to have one fabbed. Anyways, the Hollywood rack has taken my 2 bikes about 6000 miles so far in the last 6 months with no casualties yet. |

Look at something for the hitch. Don't know why you wish to avoid this unless you also tow. Otherwise you might consider the roof although drag/wind is likely an issue there (as well as those pesky drive through's). With the rear door being heavy and sometimes developing issues, you might wish to stay away from the spare tire mount ones. Take off the plastic spare cover when you use these or likely it will get worn. I agree on the Thule clamps, and trust my skis to a very inexpensice system like this. However, I certainly would not trust a bike or two on the stock cross bars (just 2 plastic nipples per side). |

I'm gonna second Brian here... A hitch receiver is the better route if you want to swap between vehicles.... a tire-mount won't work on an XJ (unless you have added a swing-away carrier), and a Disco is tall enough that I'd avoid a roof-mount. FWIW.... -L

Looks like I am going to get a hitch for the cherokee so I can swap a hitch carrier between the two. Its nice to have a hitch for both trucks just in case!! |

Go with a Saris hitch rack. The disco's roof is too tall to be mounting bikes up there.(actually, IMO, it's rather silly to mount bikes up on roofs on any SUVs - it's more of a hassle vs convenient) I've had 2 Cannondales mounted on a Saris hitch rack on the trails a couple of years ago and the rack held up the bikes through some rough terrain. Good luck! Glenn |

If you go for the hitch mounted rack, check the specs, you may need an extension in the receiver tube to clear the spare tire on the Disco. |

I've got a Yakima TerraFirma hitch-mount, holds four bikes, didn't need an extension to get past the spare..... I like the thing. It doesn't swing away like their ROCnGate does, but, it was half the price, too.... FWIW... -L
