Just bought a 30' strap today and rear receiver shackle bracket. I want to add front recovery points to the ARB winch bumper and am curious what other suggestions people have to have a good, basic set of gear to carry for off-road use.

thanks,

jeff

Here in the NW a spade and axe are a must. Hilift jack and my personal favorite DUCT TAPE. that shit will fix most anything.

A few 3/4" D-shackles
tree strap (good for a bridle even if you don't have a winch)
hi-lift
axe
shovel
transport chain
50' wire rope
winch
jack-mate
20"x20" plywood for jack base when in sand of soft ground
work gloves
spares (air filter, etc.)
tools
tarp
Red Greens Favorite duck tape
tp and wipes :-)
and I know I missed something.

Good start Al.

Flash light
Choc and/or pwer type bar and warter (It can be tiring getting unstuck).
Wool blanket
Class 1/A first aid kit
5 Lb ABC fire extinguisher...

Well in short, Personal survival gear for you or some one else (acidents happen and it could be awhile till help arrives, Stranded with food, water fire and light is much better than without).

Are we talking strictly recovery and/or repair/survival. ;-) Here are some of the things in my kit. If you look at some winch accessory kits, high-lift accessory kits, spares and tools, you will have the basics.

Hose clamps and metal straps
Bailing wire
Heater hose
Radiator hose
Belt
Rotoflex
Filters (air, oil, fuel)
JB Weld/Anti-sieze/thread lock
Siphon hose
Gas
Fluids/lubricants
Ropes/Tie downs/Shock cord
Nuts/Bolts/Screws
Hack saw/Saw

I would say a buddy truck is important. While it can be done solo, and we all have, you really are much better off when off-roading with at least one other truck, in addition to the gear listed above.

A garden hoe. Especially if you get muddy a lot. Shovelling out from under a vehicle is a real PITA, but if you can pull it out from the side you're laughing. Trust me on this one:-) Just get one, cover the head with melted candle wax, and tie it to the roof rack and forget about it.

Well, I'm just a casual weekend off roader so far. I have good tow points, plus I carry a good strap, a cell phone and a flashlight all the time.

When taking a true off road afternoon trip, I add heavy gloves, water, some spare oil, a few tools, a small sledgehammer, duct tape and a shovel. I make sure to wear proper clothes and boots so if I need to walk out I can.

Anything more then a well known Class IV road and I don't go alone... period. That's the biggest thing in my opinion.

I would certainly add a lot more if I were going on a longer trip, or on a group trail ride. I hope to put together a box of spares too. I'd like a winch someday too, but it's just too much money right now.

"Shiraz!? What were you thinking? This trail is obviously meant for a nice bottle of Pinot Gris, matched to a nice block of `mellow blue' "
