Occasionally in the winter my discovery's ecu will have trouble adjusting its idle/throttle and will race at 2500 rpm by itself. It will drive itself around and rev to 2500 as soon as I put the clutch in. After the clutch is in it takes about 30 seconds for the computer to adjust the rpm's to the normal idle. This will usually continue for the entire trip, sometimes it goes away after restarting or when it has completely warmed up. The gas pedal also is very sensitive- either on or off, no scale of giving it gas. This problem has some very fine line between happening and not, and is either there or not, so I think it must be a bad or dirty sensor. The stepper motor was very greasy, and cleaning it helped a little, but the intake manifold where it sits seems full of grease. I think that the grease turns stiff when it is cold and causes the sensor trouble. Should I clean out the intake manifold, stepper motor, or buy a new stepper? Any other ideas as to the problem? Sometimes the idle will swing up and down before stalling, after the engine was under load (separate from the racing idle problem). Also, will this show up on the OBDII read out and will I have to have my ecu reprogrammed because of all the bad signals it must get? Thanks for any ideas. Dave

Believe it or not, it could be either low coolant levels or a bad coolant temp sensor. Of course, it could also be something else, but first, get the OBDII readout. It will in all likelihood point you to the problem, and it is likely one of the engine management sensors.

It is not likely to be accumulated debirs on top of the intake manifold.
