The 12K milemarker winch I have came with 3/8 cabling rated at 14.4K, so that's fine. But it also came with a forged 3/8" clevis hook, and these are regularly rated at around 4K on just about every internet site I've seen them. Does this seem right, or am I missing something here? Are other hooks similar?

the master pull latch type hooks are rated at 17,600. they work in conjuntion with the 3/8" plasma rope that is rated at 17,500. they do have hooks that are rated up to 48,000. they are tempered grade 80 alloy steel. fyi.

good to know, the difference between a 5/8" or 3/4" shackle and smallish pin in latch hooks always struck me as odd.

FWIW, we've never used 3/8" hardware for anything over 2000lbs while working at sea. maybe it was overkill on safety margin, but I've noticed that screw pins in 5/8" shackles can get bitchy when coming out after a few serious jerks.

So what's the clevis rating on a typical 10K warn or similar? Would you recommend I get an upgrade?

dean, i think your issue is the aluminum that holds the winch cable in a loop blowing out before the hook does. if these hooks breaking stress was an issue WARN or whoever would have some sick lawsuits. that surely would have trickled down to us.

ignorance is bliss.

Rob,

Right I agree, but my hand winch which is rated at about 3500 has a clevis hook about three times bigger than the milemarker. I haven't paid much attention to other peoples winch hookers.

well is the hook on the hand winch CAST or Forged. if it's cast it would need to be bigger to get a decent amount of strength.

senior member is what happens when we are at the urinal and i take a peek over the little wall.

do you have an electric or hyraulic mile marker?
