Does anyone have a safari snorkel system? I am interested in how much, if any, they improve fuel economy/engine performance. That was I can justify getting one. Thanks in advance.

Paul,

A safari snorkel system is NOT designed to improve fuel economy/engine performance- designed to aid in water crossing. The improvements in fuel ec. are negligible.

Do a keyword search off the main page for snorkel and you'll get much, much information about Discos with snorkels.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I knew it was primarily for water fording, I am just trying to find a way to "justify" the purchase. AB advertises them as though they will increase gas mileage so I appreciate the non BS version. Thanks again!

less to spend on new airfilters....keeps the dust off of the filter.

your new justification could be you don't want to have to do a total rebuild because of too much water intake

I have had one on my truck for a while. I noticed a 1 - 2 mpg improvement.

You know, I've heard that an excessive amount of Rubbermaid containers in the back can easily be offset adding a Mantec snorkel. Really- so snorkel=more Rubbermaid=well, more Rubbermaid! No woman could resist this argument...

I've heard that the weight of adding a childseat to the back also calls for additional weight in the front- that's why you see Discos with winches! And as Garrett mentioned, they DO assist with aerodynamics...heck, I've seen LeMans numbers posted by Mantec-equipped DiscoIs!

I'm sure others can come up with convincing arguments...

just don't EVER reveal the real reason you want a snorkel - because the "high school and college chicks dig it". Nothing wrong with this argument, but she probably wouldn't approve...

With all of these great "reasons" I have no choice but to buy one...and the arb bumper..and the 12k winch....

Does anyone know how much deeper you can go with a snorkel. I'm mean the computer isn't much higher than the air intake is it?

i have a set of really big 'floaties' for my truck. crossing streams is much easier now. but seriously......what year is your truck. this will tell us a little more on where your ecu is mounted. or where your current intake is on your truck. the D2's in my opinion have a piss poor intake location. it's in the freaking wheel well.

ps: can you order up two snorkels......one for each side and then just give the 'extra' one to me? thanks!! :-)

What's really cool is the resonance that occurs at the inlet when you floor it. SOunds like a Kirby vacuum cleaner. Giddeeeeeeup!

Yeah, I notice I get none of that shit dust and dirt in the bottom of my breather box. I used to get a small amount of water in there too.

I wish I had a dime for all the questions about that damn thing.

Look at it this way, you'll be saving money on new air filters. Living out here in dusty Utah I want one of those snorkles because I replaced my air filter 5 times last year. I play to much in the deserts out here. At least thats my reason behind getting one, and the fact they look cool and get the chicks.

The MAF sensor will cut the engine out before it can suck in any water. But it only takes a few drops to stall it. So without a snorkel you'll end up stalling in water more often than with, and that's simply a very stupid place to stall!

This is especially the case on D2s, where the intake basically faces forward like a funnel.

I have one on my '96 SE-7 and it has several functions.

1. It is the single most conversation piece on the truck. People want to know what it is for, or how deep I can go.

2. It makes a really good mount for a remote GPS antenna. In fact to prove how deep it gets, that is what I usually tell people yelling at me at the stop light.

3. I bought it because most of my off-pavement driving is in really dusty areas. The air is a lot cleaner up there than under the hood (bonnet).

4. With one you can wade as deep as your ECU is mounted, (or deeper depending on how ionized the water is). Actually I try not to get my feet wet, and it takes forever for the sheepskin seat covers to dry out.

5. A small performance increase is percieved on the freeway with the intake pointed forward. If there actually is one or not is not my problem. But like Michael N. said it makes a cool sound, though its pretty quiet.

6. The Safari Snorkel appeared to be the best though out of the bunch when I bought it. The Mantec still looks like a bodge job.

The biggest drawback is if you plan any resale of your vehicle. There is always that big hole in the sheetmetal. After I bought mine, it took me almost a year to get the courage to make the cut.

But for preventing a lot of dust from being sucked into the engine (The filter wont get it all, just look at the MAF screen) I consider it well worth it.

okay general question, would one look like a wank if one had a snorkle without having a winch first?
andy, snorkle and winch less, i have snorkle envy...

I ran deep water quite often in my D2 b4 installing the snorkel and *never* stalled it, but I did get some water in the breather box. The NAS Petrol D2's stock air intake does not face forward like a funnel, it's between the wing and fender on the DS facing perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

I have a 2001 D2 so I guess my intake is between the wing and the fender. Where is the ECU?

I guess if I will look like a wanker without a winch first I'll just have to break down and buy 'em both at the same time. "honey, the guys are laughing at me because I don't have a winch, so when a big ass box shows up at the house from AB...

Figuratively speeking, of course Michael.

Reed: I guess they must have improved the Mantec quality recently, because the one I have could never be called a botched job, and in fact a couple of safari-owners I know have said they wished they had got the mantec after seeing it. I just want to be fare, that's all, instead of just cutting one down when its blatently untrue now.

Well......... From what I experienced there is a snorkel shortage, so to speak, as much as it pained me I wound up getting mine from AB because everybody else just dropped shipped them and they were on national backorder with no estimated date of arrival, it could be over now I don't know (this was 2 months ago).

Paul, first of all don't buy a winch from AB that would be dumb. Second evaluate what you need your disco to do and make modifications based on that.

I have no intentions of buying a winch. Other than high prices, any other issues with AB? I hate buying from them too, but often times no one else has the item in stock. They have the bentley D2 manual listed at 149.00. I found it at Books a million for 100.00. I have to wait, however, for three weeks as it is on back order. AB has it in stock but I can wait if it saves me fifty bucks.

Paul, sorry that "evaluate your needs" comment should have been directed at Andy, no need to worry about looking like a 'wank' just do what your needs dictate.

And no, I have no beef w/ AB except their high prices but boy are they high.

i always have a good experience buying from AB. they are my goto place becasue they always have there stuff in stock. when it's an emergency the price is worth it.

for items like this that are not of critical importance i do shop around, however i try to buy from at least someone who is specializing in land rover products.

Dean,

No insult intended to the product. It was the impresion I had when I bought my Safari several years ago. I was also more impressed with the overall design of the Safari. (OK! So I think it looks cooler.) So far I have not met another Disco owner with a Mantec, that we could sit down and compare notes. I welcome the opportunity.

To be fair though, I have only seen about three other Discos with the Safari. I am talking about real life experience, not just looking at the pictures on the web, or in a magazine.

The plastic vs Steel argument I feel is not valid, they both have their pluses and minuses.

Either way though I feel the snorkel is a valid peice of off-road gear, and should be though mandatory in dusty areas.

Safari snorkels are tough, in the short time I've had mine I've given it a few good knocks and it's done great.

I love this pic:

Carter, I was just fishing for people thoughts, I was bored at work.

I don't have either, for now I am using my hi-lift and a hand winch. I agree about evaluating you needs. I want a winch, but can't justify the expense right now as I have gotten my self out of trouble with my hand winch and hi-lift so far. Out here in Utah I don't have deep mud and I guess I'm still a beginner at wheeling so $900 for a winch I can't justify. I might get crusified for that thought instead of buying the winch first and all else later which seems to be the norm here on dweb. But snorkles look dam cool, I just don't want to look like one of those jeep wanks with the big lift and tires, but the stock sized spare ( all over out here in UT). I like the idea of keeping dust out, I really do have a need for that. I wish I could buy a good commuter and build up my discovery as a expedition/wheeling vehicle, alas I need more money for that. I know, don't follow, do what you need instead of the crowd. Actually my next mod is 265/75 MT tires with gearing to move them and a selectable locker in the rear. I'm sure I need a winch and sliders after that mod. But if a snorkle gets me a 1 to 2 mpg improvement, it might be worth it as my commute is 65 mile round trip with 90% being highway miles. I get 16mpg with a kaymar roof rack with 4 lights and an ARB bull bar with lights and 245/70 ATs.

As a general question, if I have 235/85 ATs and stock gearing, and put on a snorkle would my mileage drop or stay the same?

I say you'll get *worse* MPG with bigger tires and a snorkle installed. Don't listen to Neal, he's got brain damage from fumes leaking from the exhaust on his mustang. :-) Hell, he'd probably tell ya if you turned the head unit around, you get 2 seconds on your 0-60 times!

Seriously though, you might also consider sliders (and other protection) sooner rather than later.

Actually I have the underside protected, if I get off my lazy ass soon I will relocate my steering dampener with the parts I already have. My first need is more ground clearence under the diffs and more agressive tires. I was thinking 235/85's in a MT. I was going for lockers gears and 265/75's with my tax return, but my wife has different ideas on what to do with the return. So I probably won't have the funds for those swaps. So I am back to 235/85's with stock gearing, probably something like a bfg at or dunlop rover radial. Sliders could be worked in there some where. Only good thing is my wife loves wheeling with me, I have gotten her into driving, so maybe I can talk her out of wanting a bedroom set and wanting lockers. Turn the heads around, I'll have to try that! :-)

My MPG did get better when I intalled the snorkel. Since then, I have installed largetr tires and I am sure that my MPG is much worse now.
