Ask someone who's had BOTH a d1 and a d2, otherwise you won't get a straight answer.

But if you insist, D2 wins offroading too.:-)

well i have a D1 and my girlfriend has a D2, so can i give you some views. mine ('96) is modified a good bit. i.e. 32" tires, 2.5" lift min, ARB with 12k winch, rack, lights, sliders, etc. hers is a 2000 D2 with OME lift and 32" tires.
her truck drives much better and is more comfortable on the road. especially on long trips. also hers is much quicker and faster overall. i would also suspect that since hers is newer and with fewer miles it has been a little more reliable. buuuuuut i have to say i always like getting back in my truck, because it simply feels more like a TRUCK. she use to have a '95 and misses it quite a bit.
as for off road. depends on how you outfit it and who i behind the wheel.
but another reason i love my D1 is that i have many more options for upgrading than a D2. and then there are just the little things i appreciate about my D1. i.e. departure angle is better and a rear bumper not made of all plastic, more appropriate air intake location, a CDL, flush door handles, sweet trailer hitch, etc.

I have owned both and if I had to buy one again soley based one the assumtion that the primary reason was for off-roading, I would go to another D1. In exposure to the elements, they have much better survivability than with the D2s. The D2 is more comfortable and powerful than the D1's though.

Hey, when I dream about the perfect wife she says "honey will you by me a brand new Disco, beef it for 4x4 and teach me to wheel and everything you know about auto mechanics" but in reality I hear "hey honey I want you to buy me a brand new BMW 745 Li it's my dream vehicle"

My gf has a '96 Willow Green w/ OME HD, 245/75 Dueler MTs, ARB Bull Bar, Warn XD9000, Rack, Hellas, CB, and some underbody stuff. Got it for her sixteenth b-day. Not bad...even though I picked it out for her parents....lol

We bought the D1 after owning a Chevy Tracker for 130k miles. Most of the reason we have a 4x4 is the snow. We had great luck with the Tracker, although it was too small and too underpowered and tricky to steer over 60mph.

But the thing about the Tracker that we learned, is that it has no center diff (cheeeeaaapppp). When it is in 4wd it's locked axle to axle. Which makes it hard to steer, but it also went in the snow like nothing else we have ever owned.

So at the time we bought the Disco, there were 99D1 and the new 99D2. We went back and forth, test drove both and did some thinking. We ended up with the D1 because it had the ability to lock the center diff, the 99D2 did not. Also, the price on the D1 was better.

Since then I have also learned that the axles on the D1 are full floating, whereas on the D2 they are not. But likely just as sturdy, unless you plan to drop it out the back of a C130 with a parachute.
