I have a '97 D1 and recently changed the front brake pads. The manual states (actual words): "Check total disc runout with a dial indicator, this must not exceed 0.15 mm (0.006 inch). If necessary, reposition disc." What does this mean? How do I do it? Where do I buy a Dial Indicator?

Brian:
I own several dial indicators and am known for being very anal about such things. I don't check runout...

What does it mean: Runout is an indication or measurement of the eccentricity of a rotating body. In this case, it is referring to how true the rotor is turning.

How do you do it: Attach your trusty nifty dial indicator to a fixed component of the truck that allows you to position the indicator where it will contact the outer edge of the rotor. Turn the rotor while watching the needle on the indicator. If the indicator deviates by more than 0.006" (which is pretty darned tight), remove the rotor from the truck and reposition it with respect to the spindle, bearings, etc.

Where does one buy a dial indicator: Machine shop supply houses, Harbor freight tools, etc.

Thanks Paul. I am still trying to figure out why I have a burning smell (brake pads hopefully) coming from both front hubs after drives. The smell started after I rebuilt both front hubs and swivels.
