2000 Discovery II with 38k miles. I just started hearing a 'whining' engine noise right at 1200 rpm. The engine needs to be warm to hear this noise. I hear the same noise whether in drive or neutral. Idle is at 700-800 rpm. There is no noise at idle. No noise at 1300 rpm+. I even tried shifting the transfer box into neutral - same noise. Anyone have any ideas? |

Fan clutch? Belt squeal? Bearing in one of the ancilaries or more likely an idler pulley? Listen close to each bit and it will present itself. Ron |

I think Ron's right, probably the idler pulley. I've had this a couple of times around the rpm levels you mention. |

If it is the idler pulley bearing or others, you should be able to pinpoint by opening the hood and reving the motor up and down*. Dealer (under warranty) just replaced both pulleys on my '00 DII at 47K miles *thru the T/B cable and I had to show the LR service advisor and he agreed it needed replacement. |

The RH idler pulley fails quite often and creates the noise. LR just issued a new METAL pulley. The part number is PQR500060. I was going to list this in a seperate post but i saw you asking. |
