I'm a newbie, so take it easy....
It's a '98 Disco and the lights around the heater/ac controls in the middle compartment are out. No blown fuse and the light in the dash (rpm, fuel, ...) are OK. The light(s) inside the window switches are OK too. Is this a blown bulb? Where is it? Does it work with fiber glass from some other bulb some where else? If so, how do I take it appart to check or replace it?
Any input is appreciated, Thanks...
Frank

Frank, it's funny, mine had recently went out on my 98 disco as well. Everything seems fine, but I have no dash lights. God forbid I get pulled over at night and the cop can't see my lights.

Please, let me know what you find, because it's driving me crazy

It looks like nobody else has that problem. So, if I don't get a hint I guess I have to start take panels and covers off to find whatever I'm looking for. If I find something I'll let you know...
Thanks
Frank

I share the same problem! But mine has been intermittent so when I gave the top of the dash an openhanded whack, the bulb behind the heater controls would come on. I have just assumed it was a loose bulb but Im also interested in the responses to this thread as I'd like to remove some of the dash or controls to get in there. And Id like to be able to do it without breaking plastic tabs, etc.!! Hope to hear from someone.

Not only did my dash lights go out, but my two back windows don't go down and the back break light don't work (only when you hit the breaks)

This sucks!

Have the same problem in my 98 D1. Didn't know it was a problem as it has never worked in the year I've owned it. One day while looking through the Haynes manual I noticed a small bulb behind the climate area of the dash. Haven't fixed it yet but it looks fairly simple!

Mine has recently developed a similar problem. I think it is in the switch on the steering column. All of my interior lights go out somethimes...but I noticed that it happens mostly when I put the turn signal on.
Also...last night I noticed that my parking lights go out with the dash lights, leading me to believe it is the switch.
I am going to try to lube the connectors with WD-40 and see if it helps.

I suggest checking to see if your parking lights are working when your dash lights are out.

My dash lights were out, and it was the switch on the steering column. It had partially melted (yikes), and was not making contact. Headlights were working, but dash lights weren't.

Seems like I must be missing something, but it sounds to me like the original poster (Frank) Simply has a burned-out bulb for the AC console. This just happened on my 1996 Disco...not sure if the 1998 is the same but here is how you change the bulb on a 1996. All you do is pull off the fan knob and three AC dials(driver and passenger temperature, and vent position). Underneath the dials are two screws. Remove the screws, then remove the panel and voila - there is a single bulb back there that lights up the AC console.

Hope this helps!

-Danny

Ok, guys! It's fixed! It wasn't the bulb neither a switch or a wire! Like I said before, it was an intermiting problem with the light bulb for the heater light(s). It was the base for the bulb! There are the two connectors that are supposed to make the contact with the bulb. Well one of them didn't! I twisted that one a little and now it's working.
Danny explained the procedure very good to get to it (Thanks again!). BTW I got the shop manual today, NICE!
Thanks to all of you...

Nope. Not even the light in the glove box. Only the light (one bulb) for the heater controls wasn't working. But it's fixed now.

I have a 98 with no dash lights also. First happened several weeks ago. The fuse was out. The correct fuse was a 10, I replaced it with a 15. A couple off weeks ago the fuse went out again so I relaced it with a 20 (bad idea, dont try this at home LOL). This weekend lights went out again but this time the fuse is still good. Did I really mess something up? What should I start checking?
Thanks,
Dan

Check the light in the glove box. If this light is not mounted properly and shakes around a little it will short and thereby cause the dash lights to go out.

I went out and checked it. The glove box light was not working. Could not figure out how to get to it. Any tips on how to get it out. Rear tail lights are also out. Thanks for any help. Seems like this is pretty common to the 98 model. I always here that 98 is one of the best years for the DI.

Dan, I think it just needs a little screwdriver to bend back the plastic tab. The it should drop out. Before using the screwdriver, try sliding the light in one direction as this may bend the plastic tab enough for it to drop. be careful when remounting it. Make sure the metal of the light assembly does not touch the grounding metal around where the light installs. AFter replacing the bulb, leave the light hanging and replace whatever fuses are necessary. Then check everything first to see if it works. If so, turn off power and place light assembly back in glove box and re-test. Good Luck.
