Strange noise coming from the right side. In asking and reading through the archives, all signs point to wheel bearings. Driving today it was hard to take off from a stop (like brake was on) and a strange metal burning smell coming fron the right rear tire. How bad is it messed up? Got instructions from the archives on changing the bearings on a range rover. How similar are they?

Stop driving it before you ruin the rear end. My jeep had a simular problem and my wheel passed me on the road when the bearing let go. only took one day of driving mine like that before it exploded. I had to replace not only the 20 dollar bearing but the entire axle housing the bearing dammaged the housing making it unusable. |

the Disco 1 and the Range Rover share an axle. So they are exactly the same. At this point however, you are quite likely going to need the assistance of a machine shop to get those destroyed bearing races out of your hub. Do it now, before you ruin the spindle. It may be too late anyway, but stop driving the thing. -P |

Right. I figured stop driving it. I had no choice yesterday, though. It has been parked at work for a few days. Thanks. I'm taking to apart today after school. I'll let you all know what I find. ...Let the adventure begin... |

Definitely attend to it right away - but FYI - Rover axles are full floating, so you cannot lose the entire wheel like on a c-clip axle. Bill |

So my instructions for a 91 RR will work for the bearing on a 97 D1? Best case...bad bearings. Replace and I'm ok. Worst case...what am I looking at? Most likely case...somewhere in between. |

You mean my instructions for a 91RR Yes, they will work just fine. Worst case, you'll have bad bearings, and the spindle (axle stub) will be scored and need to be replaced. YOu'll also want a new axle seal as that one has probably seen very high heat. Everything else in there is pretty sturdy. -P |

I'll give you one guess why I wrote it. And why I know from memory what parts you'd need.
