Unmodified it is better than a Defender, twin lockers make it better for offroading.
Hummer...not sure totally different application. It's like saying better than Honda Civic, in what way may you ask....
Think outside the box for a moment...

Willie,

what do you mean by "think outside of the box?"
Is it a funky way to say a Hummer is better than a G?
That's a really unorthodox view...

well, let me rephrase it.

how is the application the same between a Defender and G-wagen, and different between a G and a Hummer?

"think out side of the box"
=
get out of the boxy G,
look at it, and realize it's the ugliest hunk of shit.

Personally Ho I think it looks like a hunk of shit from the back, but the front looks ok.

Or is it the other way round, I forget now.

I think those marketing guys at MB are really on the ball. I mean do you realize how much profit they must make on the ugly trucks? They have been making them forever so I would guess they paid for the orginal development costs. They could really read us americans, make a truck that will appeal to the bling bling crowd and you can make loads of money. The older g's here in slc seamed to owned by people who appreciate the g's ablity and durablity. The new ones seem to want them for the bling factor. But as Ho said "...uglist hunk of shit." I have seen more G's running around here in Utah than new RR's.

I think it is relative as to what you plan to use the vehicle for. Is a G-wagen "better" than a Defender or a Hummer? Hmmm maybe, if you want seat warmers or the ability to park downtown. Is a G better off-road? Arguably about the same as the stock Defender but not if you have to drive over a 3-foot wall (hummer). Although for most of the trails I've run in Colorado, a hummer wouldn't make it past the trailhead (too wide). One could also make the argument that putting all that money into upgrades for a J**p would result in a vehicle that would outperform them all, but would you really want one? I think it is very telling that the ad makes the comment in the first place. My $.02

Peter,

You guy's are not getting it....would you compare a Hoda Civic head to head with a Dodge Ram 3500 diesel? NO !
So, why compare a Hummer with a Defender? The one is better in one way and yes in certain applications I would love that power and size of a Hummer. But in others (those I am more use to spending more time in) I certainly prefer a Defender or G.
Bring a stock G-wagon and a stock Defender to my track in West Vancouver and the Defender will not keep up with the G. That is a fact....forget the looks for a moment or the non rusting aluminum body or the fact that anything can be added to a 110 to make it more capable etc.
Fact is the G was years ahead of it's time when it was first built. So was the Range Rover at the time, but every one else caught up in the mean time.
What I would do is compare a Unimog with a Hummer, that is more in the same legue, don't you think....?

Would be interesting to know how many times the discusion came up: Is a Discovery or Defender better than a .....?

We are doing a round the World trip in 2005. We have yet to decide on a vehicle to use as all 5 must be the exact same. What would you use????
Try and figure this one out...then you will see what I mean by think outside the box.
BTW we will cross the desert in Africa, highways through Europe, bad dirt roads in China and Russia, bad roads all over and some jungle in South America...oh, and it has to fit in a 20' container....!

I'd say look for a Land Cruiser, One of the ones not imported into the US. The ones with the factory turbo Diesel, snorkle, lockers(3), and hand throttle. Parts should be easy to get anywhere except the US and relable product. The second choice should be a g wagon, but not the luxury one, a good utility verson from europe. Still think I'd look for a diesel. After that a d-110 and maybe mix a d-130 for gear? Not sure how long a crewcab D-130 is though.

Funny enough this is the short list at the moment.
80 series Cruiser (Turbo diesel)(lots of power and lots of diesel too)
110 Td5 (we use these at the moment in Africa)(economical but slightly under powered when loaded)
300 Gd (G-wagon)(same issues as Td5)our sister company in Germany uses them.

To bad us Americans can't buy any of those ... :-( I guess the turbo diesels might get here as the government tights min. mileage use for truck fleets, but probably what will happen is we get up getting smaller v-8's or v-6's with less power then we have now. I love those tdi vw's and diesel makes sense for offroaders, oh well.

The G-box has one thing particularly going to for it: like most 4x4's it can lock its transfer case to deliver power to both front and rear axles. And like some 4x4's (stock) it can lock it's rear differential. And almost exclusively (beside the Rubiclown) it can lock it's front axle also: this box can lock up everything (3 lockers) and that's pretty cool....but that's about where it ends. The clearance isn't spectacular and it has limited articulation on account of that. Beyond that, it's just a gussied-up Isuzu Trooper!

The Defender is the hot-ticket, it'll get into and out of places the G-box can't. And I'm not even into LR's....I've got an H2!

Stock 80 series cruiser can also lock all three differentials...

Only some can. Most can't, and even if they could, the owners don't know it, or what it is for.

The LC's are sweet though, check out an FJ-70 series troop carrier - that would be a nice truck. They are even more rare in the US than a D-110.
