Whats going on I have 95 D1 and the head gasket is leaking.. Almost sound like a spark plug is shot, or exhaust manifold crack but a mom and pop shop said it was the head gasket for sure. How hard is the job to do myself.. and also how much do you think it should cost me (Do you think its worth bring to dealer, because at least they warranty the job). Also do you think I should get both sides dont or only the side leaking. Man.. this car really is a DISCOVERY!! every week its something.. here is a quick synopsis of 2003 already..

- New coolant reservouir and cap
- New alternator
- New cigeratte lighter
- New brake pads and rotors front/back
- New headlamp repair kit
- New shocks
- New rear window sprayer
- New accelerator cable

Thats only for 2003... dont talk about 2002

I always talk about getting rid of it.. and every time I almost have everything fixed to sell.. something else breaks.. I am at the point where its almost not worth selling cuz I repaired just about everything...

Thanks
Rich

I replaced the head gaskets on my 88RRC. It was doable, but by far the most complicated job I've done on a vehicle.

Cost?
$150 for the gasket kit.
$300-500 to have machine shop do the valves.

Plan on $1500 - $2000 for a shop to do the job.

It took me a weekend to get it apart, I had the valves done during the week and another weekend to button it up.

If you decide to do it, make sure you keep eveything clean, label everything and keep organized. You will need a good torque wrench and shop manual.

Good Luck,
John

You asked about doing both sides, yes do both. I would also suggest the 4.0 composite gaskets. You should have also noted that I included having a valve job done. You didn't note your milage, but, since the heads are out, you should have it done unless it was done recently (but then you too would have new head gaskets), these engines are prone to valve problems.

I forgot that with the composite gaskets you will need new style head bolts. $70

Head gaskets do not normally cause noise like you are describing. I'd get a second opinion if I were you. Sounds to me like manifold gaskets.

I've done it twice. First time it was a piece of cake. It took me about ten hours. Second time the head bolt on the end was stuck (the one down in the valley that you can't get to with a cut off wheel). I tried every trick; heat, tapping with a drift punch, impact wrench (both air and manual) and it eventually rounded off. Tried drilling it out but ended up spending over ten hours of quality time with the dremel. Very frustrating.
Both times it was making the sounds you're describing. With a mirror I could see where mine had blown out. If in doubt run a compression check. Good luck.

Yeah I think I am going to take it to the shop to get done... Probally over my head.. plus will want the valves done to.. The car has never had the valves done and this is the first time the head gasket has gone.. it has 117,000 miles... on it..
