i change the oil in my rrc every 3-4k miles; for some reason, today i payed attention to the prices of all the different brands of oil. prices ranged from $0.88 to $2.18 a quart for dino-oil. is there really a differnece in the quaility of oil you pay more for? if you change the oil so often (i put 3K miles on truck in one month)why not use the $0.88/qt store brand?

I would not do that if I were you. You will not be able to see the difference until it's too late. Cheap 10-30 is made from a very rough, light (2-3W) base stock and lost of additives, which when they fail, leave you with a motor full of water thin sludgy mess. We fix the results of LR engines where owners and ever dealer service departments went the "cheap oil" route. You can pay big for this strategy. Use good oil, preferably synthetic, changed at 4-5,000 miles for most drivers. Look at the advice section on my web site soon for an article on this. I have teardown photos of Mobil 1 engines, good dino oil, and cheap oil for all to compare. Look about March 1st for that article and afew others. |
