HELP!!!!

Car was running fine. When I turned on the lights, or blinker, the speedometer would jump. The lights were also very dim. Is my battery dead?? It lasted about 4 months and had to get another one but it was under warranty and it's only like a 10-15min job to change it out. Right after I installed it, the first few times I started the engine, it ran like total crap, the speedo wouldn't work, jumped around, and it had trouble idleing. It seemed fine after I got out of class and drove back home. Is that wacky stuff typical for the first few runs?
