was there a technical reason rover changed the coolant recovery system when the went to the 3.9 or was it just economics? i have to keep putting coolant in my 3.9 1988 rrc about every 3 days. i know of other 1988 models that do the same. cant find a leak, even under presure testing. recovery tank keeps presure on it even over night.

If you have to put coolant in it every 3 days there are two possibilities:
1 - you are overfilling it. leave it alone and it may stabilize at a lower level
2 - there is a leak you have not found, possibly a head gasket

As an aside, 1988 Rovers didn't have 3.9 motors from the factory. 3.9 arrived in MY 1989.

I ONLY REFILL WHEN THE LITE COMES ON INSIDE. I KEEP THINKING ITS A HEAD GASKET BUT NO OTHER SIGNS OF THAT (OVER HEAT, NOT HOLDING PRESURE, SMELL ETC....)ITS BEEN DOING THIS FOR OVER 2YEARS!; HAVE HAD EVERYTHING ELSE CHECKED OR REPLACED. IS THERE A WAY TO DETERMINE IF ITS A HEAD GASKET WITHOUT REMOVING THE HEADS? MY MECHANIC NOW THINKS IT MUST BE THE SMALLER RESERVOIR, I DID REPLACE THE 3.5 ENGINE WITH A 3.9

To check for head gasket leakage you can take an exhaust gas analyser and sniff the coolant tank. If you have much leakage you'll have combustion gases in the coolant and the sniffer will pick them up.

There are chemical tests that do the same thing. Kits are available at big parts houses
