My riding mower did this, and the gear on the starter was trashed. I will assume my starter is the original and I have 126K on the clock.

Any advice? Big snow coming tonight and I would rather drive my disco than my MG Midget.

Okay this was strange. I had my wife come outside to turn the key so that I could perform the "bang on the starter while spinning" test. After she busted her ass in the snow and ranted about how she is moving to somewhere where it doesn't snow, she crawled in the disco.

She turned the ignition, and starter just spun. She then closed the drivers door and it started up. I told her to turn it off and she did. She then opened the door and I asked her to start it again, just spun. I told her to get out and I got in. I tried to start it (door still open) nothing. Closed the door and it started.

I too suffer from the "won't start (engage) the first try when it's cold" syndrome. It will (until today's episode) start on the second try.
I will bet the bendix spring is bad, but is there something related to the door-closed starting thing?

It's probably the starter solonoid? I had to replace mine. Don't know about the door thing.

You need a starter. Nothing else is involved if it's spinning with no grind or other noise. If it's grinding you may need a flywheel. Buy genuine Rover - right now they are about $200 brand new.

My first starter did this and was replaced at 55k or so.the Mean green unit does it from time to time. Completely switching off the ignition and trying it a second time results in a correct start everytime....

the starter might be fine.. have a good electric shop test it out for you... but what makes the gear not engage is a worn out bendix spring... basically its the spring lets the gear disengage from the fly wheel after the truck is started.. when the starter reaches a certain rpm (more than it can spin under its own power) the spring will allow the geat to release...

If the actual starter motor tests fine (electrically) the bendix is usually just a few bucks.. most of the cost is the labor to pull the starter (which you could easily do yourself.)

Good luck.

I like the tip about checking the spring. I just got home from my accountant. Damn taxes. I guess it is a good thing that I actually owe now instead of getting a big refund. Or is it........
So my whole point about my little rant is, I am back in cheap ass mode.

Since I posted the note, the starter has worked intermittently. Spins just great but usually when it is super cold. A little theory I have now is that the heat generated from the starter spinning is helping the spring do it's thing. It was about 9 deg F this morning and it took several turns for it to work.
