I have a new 2003 Discovery that has about 600 miles on it. I am planning a cross country drive (San Diego to Vermont) and am considering trailering my girlfriend's car during the trip. Does anyone have any input about towing so much such a long way. I took pains to break in the engine as recommended in the owners manual but this is my first Disco and am concerned about the stress this might cause and any long term effects. Her car is a Volvo V70 wagon. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You can ship the Volvo cross country for $1,200. Buying a trailer will cost more. Renting will be a significant fraction. I would haul the Volvo across the state but not across the country. I'm sure others on this forum would haul it cross country in a heartbeat but now me. The Rover's just not a good tow rig for a 4000lb load.

I dont think that it would be wise to tow with a fresh, not broken motor!!! i think that it would shorten the life of the truck dramitacally! DONT DO IT!!!!! Peter

Check your towing capacity. I'll bet when you calculate the weight of the volvo+Trailer+things you'll put in the volvo you'll either be over or right at the top end of the towing capacity.

Not to mention the cost of the extra fuel cost towing plus renting the trailer. Compare that with the cost of a transporter I'll bet you'll just about break even or lower with the transporter. I wouldn't do it.

Enjoy the drive through the beautiful USA without a trailer to worry about.

Drive the Volvo, transport the Disco:-)

You'll save money on gas, get there faster, and keep the miles off of your car!

I drove my 99 DII from Texas to Florida with my wifes Saab in tow. As long as the trailer has brakes then no worries. I would swap the diff oil out for some mobile 1 or Amzoil then just drive off into the sunset. I averaged over 65 mph on the trip and got 14mpg, no shit! The milage was the same that I get when towing nothing. I calculated milage at each fill up and as long as I used 93 octane it was all good. I would put the wife on a plane though, women are no fun to do long road trips with!
